The former Disney series DuckTales has always had a pretty big following, with Mondo posters, video game rereleases and more paying homage to the series in recent years. Now, Disney XD has plans to introduce DuckTales to an entire new generation. This week, the channel announced that DuckTales will be returning to television in 2017.

That’s right, Scrooge McDuck and his three great nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie will be returning to the small screen. According to Disney’s press release, other characters who will be returning for the new DuckTales include Donald Duck, Duckworth, Webby Vanderquack, Gyro Gearloose, Launchpad McQuack, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle, Bouncer Beagle), and Mrs. Beakley. So basically, the whole gang’s getting back together, which means the new adventures should be fairly similar to the old. Here's the art Disney released today related to DuckTales 2.0.

Disney’s had a bit of luck lately with reworking shows for a new generation. Case in point: Boy Meets World has become Girl Meets World. Luckily, DuckTales is animated and could theoretically pick up right where the 1987-1990 TV series left off (or, at least following the events of DuckTales The Movie) rather than having to rework its premise to accommodate some of the original actors, like Girl Meets World.

Disney doesn’t explicitly note this in its press release, but it seems like DuckTales is still a pretty popular franchise for the company. DuckTales is currently available as part of the Disney Channel WATCH App and the show also has components in the Disney Infinity Toy Box. But if I had to guess, the viral video featuring the DuckTales theme song recreated with actual ducks may have gone a long way to remind people how great the animated series was.

Obviously, 2017 is a ways away, and Disney XD still has to hire a team and sign on some voice actors before the real work gets done, but at least we know that DuckTales is definitely moving forward to series. We’ll let you know as new details emerge related to the new series.
