The Farrelly Brothers To Produce A Comedy For Showtime

Showtime is looking to pick up a raunch-comedy series. Currently in development, the project stems from writers Chris Pappas, Mike Bernier, and Kevin Barnett. It will reunite the writers with directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly for the first time since their work on the 2008 Fox Comedy Unhitched. Though Unhitched fell apart rather quickly, the group seems pretty ready to give TV comedy another go.

If the series does go to air, it could be lucrative for the five gentlemen, who are all executive producing the project. According to Deadline, the series will follow a man whose wife has recently cheated on him. The infidelity is especially a hard blow since the couple had been married for years (the writer recognizes infidelity is always a big deal). Angry and cynical, the man’s subsequent midlife crisis will set the basis for the show.

I would say I was super excited about the five gentlemen’s project. However, the group’s last pitch, Unhitched , was an epic failure despite coming from the Farrelly Brothers and featuring Rashida Jones -- of which I am actually thankful since Jones ended up on Parks and Recreation. On the bright side, instead of attempting a raunch comedy program for network TV, this time the Farrelly Brothers and co. are moving to subscription cable, which will allow them a whole new, unfiltered avenue for their humor. I can’t say whether or not the comedy will be a success, but I do have hope it will push the boundaries that we’ve come to expect from subscription cable comedies. Or, that it will at least find a niche.
