Remember about a year and a half ago, when the DuckTales theme song inexplicably became popular again thanks to a couple of videos and cover versions? You might also recall that this resurgence was followed by news that Disney XD was bringing the beloved cartoon back for a new generation of animation hounds. Now, at long last, the first visual has surfaced from the impending DUckTalesrevamp, and it’s great.
That first look has me so amped up that I can’t even think of any worthy duck-themed puns to use to describe it. It’s been over 25 years since a new episode of DuckTales hit the airwaves, and I can’t help but think that the wise and clever minds over at Disney XD are going to bring this revival into the modern age in the best way possible while never letting go of what made the original series, and these time-honored characters, so loveable in the first place.
Part of that optimistic enthusiasm is informed by the animation style seen in the image, which was shared by the Disney Blog. With its more muted palate and playful use of outlines and borders, this visual sense looks similar to that used in the fabulous recent series of shorts, simply called Mickey Mouse, that pays homage to the Disney cartoons of old with today’s sensibilities, making for some delightfully weird and frantic cartoons that can appeal to all ages. Check out one such example below.
Now, I don’t expect DuckTales’ style or humor (or anything else, really) to be quite as extreme and overstated as a lot of those shorts are, but just the hint that the creative team is using the same throwback style is enough for me. Plus, it’s hard to knock anything animated happening at Disney XD, which has warmed our Gravity Falls-missing hearts with its dedication to bringing out as much Star Wars content as it can, LEGO or not.
DuckTales will likely stick to the same basic story of the original series, and the comic books before it, with the billionaire Scrooge McDuck taking care of his great-nephews Huey, Duey and Louie in some form, although perhaps Donald’s presence here implies he’ll have a greater presence this time around. They’ll have adventures, probably with other characters like Bubba Duck and Launchpad McQuack, and they’ll come to blows with greedy antagonists like the Beagle Boys and hopefully Magica De Spell. We can probably expect to see some new characters popping up as well. And if they don’t bring in Darkwing Duck, I’m going to pitch the biggest fit.
The Remake Machine has been busy on TV in recent years, and the realm of animated favorites has not been forgotten, with Netflix offering both a superb update of Mr. Peabody and Sherman and a new version of Inspector Gadget. Unfortunately, we’ll still be waiting a while to get our wings on new DuckTales episodes, as the series won’t be premiering on Disney XD until 2017.
