Haven Has Been Canceled, Will End After Season 5

Bad news just came down the pipeline. On Tuesday, Haven showrunner Gabrielle Stanton confirmed that the drama has been canceled by cable network Syfy. Although there is some bright news on the horizon in that Haven still has a few brand new episodes set to air this fall, production has now wrapped on the series, this time for good. There will be no sixth season of the drama.

For those who have been keeping up with the Syfy drama, the news may not come as a total surprise. When Haven was picked up for a fifth season, the episode order was supercharged, with 26 episodes ordered over a two-season period. More than a year ago, people involved with Haven were viewing the extended Season 5 as the show’s last. Then, because less than a million viewers were tuning in to watch Haven at the beginning of Season 5, it became clear that the split fifth season would probably be the show’s last, and that’s exactly what happened.

On the bright side, Stanton told The Wrap that the writing team and the cast and crew were prepared for Haven to end. In fact, they treated the upcoming 13 episodes as if they could be the last that Haven would ever produce.

We are looking at our final episodes coming up. We approached as if it was going to be our final season, so we were ready for it story-wise. But you never know. If a million people watch, maybe we can do something about that… But we had an idea that it might be [the final season]… So we really looked at these 13 episodes as if… If we were indeed going to end, what would be the best ending we could possibly do for Haven?

At the end of its run, the show will have produced 78 total episodes—which may not be a ton for network TV but is an extremely sizable number for cable. The drama also—smartly—saw the writing on the wall and crafted a series of episodes that the fans can be proud of and invested in. There will be no cliffhangers to disappoint fans as Haven finishes out its run.

Over the past five seasons, Haven has seen a small town in Maine torn upside down by people with supernatural abilities. We’ve seen characters like Audrey delve deeper into the history and mythology related to the town. And we’ve seen interesting actors, from Jason Priestley to William Shatner, pop up. The show has done a lot with the episodes that have aired so far and is now being given the chance to capably wrap up.

We still have a few months before Haven makes its long-awaited return to the schedule. The second half of the fifth season will premiere on Thursday, October 8 at 10 p.m. ET. To find out when the rest of your cable favorites will be returning, check out our fall TV premiere schedule.
