Word is officially in, Grey’s Anatomy fans! Katherine Heigl is done with the series and will not be returning for the last handful of episodes of this season as was originally the plan.

Entertainment Weekly posted a preview of their cover story for the next issue of the magazine, which features a prayerful Heigl on the cover. Among the tidbits shared from the interview (the rest of which you can read in EW’s issue, which hits stands tomorrow), was Heigl’s confirmation that she worked out a deal with the show to be released from her contract early.

Heigl stated that her reason for leaving is “family issues” and not her film career, which is prospering pretty well.

“I started a family and it changed everything for me,” says Heigl, who took a three-month family leave from Grey’s this season to bond with her newly-adopted daughter, Naleigh. “It changed my desire to work full-time.”

What does this mean for Izzie? Well, the writers will just have to figure out how to close out her story arc without bringing her back. ABC did release a statement wishing Heigl well and hinting at a “shocking season finale” for Grey’s this year. As for any concerns about the show’s fate, ABC also mentioned the series being a “great show for seasons to come.”
