Say what you will about MTV and their Video Music Awards-- and if you're over the age of 18, you're probably just going to talk about how much better they were when you were young-- but they're still a pretty decent barometer for measuring what's popular in a given year. The nominations for this year's VMAs were announced today, and while they're not picking anything groundbreaking or out of left-field, the list will make for a pretty decent "Now That's What I Call Music In July Of 2013." Or, at least, what you call music for people who really love Justin Timberlake.

Timberlake leads the pack with 4 nominations, including Video of the Year for "Mirrors" and Best Collaboration for "Suit & Tie" with Jay-Z. Right behind him were Macklemore & Lewis, who earned a Video of the Year nomination for "Thrift Shop" plus another nod for Best Hip-Hop video for "Can't Hold Us"; they earned a third nomination for "Best Video With A Message," for their gay marriage-supporting "Same Love." but we'd like to pretend that category doesn't exist for the time being. Joining JT and M&L in the top category are Bruno Mars for "Locked Out of Heaven," Robin Thicke (with T.I. and Pharrell) for the controversial "Blurred Lines," and Taylor Swift for "I Knew You Were Trouble."

In this time when music videos aren't ever actually on television and only get seen by a lot of people when they go insanely viral), you're kind of tempted to judge contests like this based on relevance… which gives the obvious edge to "Blurred Lines," a video that's still sexist in its censored form but also damn fun. Check it out below to jog your memory:

JT's similarly scandalous video for "Tunnel Vision" isn't nominated, which means his lengthy video for "Mirrors" will be facing off against "Blurred Lines" with a lot less nudity. Here's that one below:

Check out the full list of nominees, and at the bottom of the post the remaining three Video of the Year nominees. The Video Music Awards-- which are as unpredictable as insane as anything else on MTV, and therefore we will not even try to tell you what we think will win-- will be held on August 25 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
