Kathy Griffin Just Quit Fashion Police, Get The Details

Someone better bring some handcuffs to the Fashion Police set, or else there will be no way to keep anyone there for very long. Just two weeks after Kelly Osbourne walked away from the series, new recruit Kathy Griffin has announced she has also left the show after appearing in only seven episodes. Is it time to pull the plug yet or what?

Rarely one to mince words, Griffin made the announcement through Twitter, where she posted an image of a wall of text. In it, she spends about 80% of the message championing herself, her views, and all of her pop culture accomplishments, and the other 20% explaining her reasoning behind quitting. (Can’t say she’s terrible at self-promotion, that’s for sure.) The comedian explains that her style, “while unrepentant and unafraid, is all about CONTEXT,” and that making fun of people’s bodies doesn’t fit into that. Here’s how she explained her decision.

I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance towards difference. I want to help women, gay kids, people of color and anyone who feels underrepresented to have a voice and a LAUGH!...After 7 episodes of Fashion Police I discovered that my style does not fit with the creative direction of the show & now it’s time to move on.

Perhaps tellingly, Griffin didn’t mention any of the behind-the-scenes drama that Fashion Police has recently been the center of, including co-host Giuliana Rancic’s arguably off-color comment about actress Zendaya’s hair at the Oscars. (That incident, despite being followed by Rancic’s apology, is reportedly what got Osbourne out the door.) I guess that wasn’t the kind of “brash and eccentric” humor that Griffin likes.

Only yesterday, Griffin came out and casually gave Rancic the advice that she shouldn’t have other people write her Fashion Police jokes (such as the one about Zendaya’s hair), and that she should be herself, according to the SunTimes. It didn’t seem quite likely after that interview that Griffin and Rancic would have a flawless working relationship, but we don’t even get to find out what would have happened now.

At least now Bravo can give her another show if they want to. Though it would probably be easier to halt Fashion Police for a while and regroup, as was done after Joan Rivers died, E! will bring the series back to audiences on Monday, March 30, with Rancic and Brad Goreski joined by executive producer Melissa Rivers.
