Laura Vandervoort Is Heading To Supergirl, Get The Details

One of the most fun aspects of Supergirl has been the supporting cast that has brought a couple of past Supers back to the small screen in new roles. Dean Cain traded in his cape from his time as Superman on Lois & Clark to play Kara’s foster dad, and Helen Slater, who played Supergirl in the 1984 film of the same name, plays Kara’s foster mom. Now, another past Super will join the cast, as actress Laura Vandervoort will leave behind the role of Supergirl from her time on Smallville to play new character Indigo. Jeff Branson has also been cast.

Supergirl’s Indigo will be a living, strong-willed supercomputer. While such an individual would undoubtedly make a valuable ally to Kara Danvers, it looks like Indigo will be more of a villain than a good guy. Sentenced to Fort Rozz after turning against the people of Krypton, Indigo will let nothing stand in her way on Earth. Indigo showing up in National City will likely be a big “uh oh” for Kara and Co., but Laura Vandervoort appearing on Supergirl should be a definite “hell yes!” for viewers.

Vandervoort played Kara for four years on Smallville, although her portrayal of Supergirl was quite different than the version that Melissa Benoist has brought to life on CBS. In fact, Vandervoort’s Kara didn’t even go by the name “Supergirl” until toward the end of her tenure on Smallville. Considering that Supergirl has a touch of the camp and a lot of the action of Smallville, there can be no doubt that Vandervoort will be a perfect addition to the cast of Supergirl as Indigo.

Indigo will be a recurring character, so we at least know that she’ll survive her initial appearance. Hopefully she’ll be around long enough to share a scene with Helen Slater and/or Dean Cain as well as Melissa Benoist. Honestly, all we’d need is a crossover with the Flarrow-verse over on The CW, and Brandon Routh could bring another past Super to Supergirl.

Soap star Jeff Branson will be departing from his sudsy roots on The Young and the Restless and All My Children to take on another alien who made it to Earth with Fort Rozz.

Jeff

Branson will be playing Master Jailer, who has been described as the forceful and unrelenting jail guard on Fort Rozz. He is now hellbent on catching all of the escapees and brutally bringing them to justice.

All in all, the latest casting news out of Supergirl is pretty exciting. The show has yet to fail in bringing incredibly creative villains out of the vault of Fort Rozz, and we can be sure that Laura Vandervoort will be fantastic in her new role. Considering that Indigo sounds like just the type of alien that Master Jailer will want to get his hands on, we may see Vandervoort and Jeff Branson duking it out in the not-too-distant future.

Supergirl airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Check out our list of midseason premieres to see when your other favorites are returning to the screen in 2016.
