With the seventh season of So You Think You Can Dance set to premiere on May 27th, Fox appears to have gotten all of their ducks in a row as far as the judges table goes. The network announced today that choreographer Mia Michaels will be joining Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman as the official judges for the season.

Shankman’s had some time in the past season or two to get used to a more permanent judging gig on the series as opposed to just guest-judging once in a while but this will be Mia Michaels’ first time as a full-on judge. As for Mary Murphy, Fox left her name out of the announcement they made but according to the Hollywood Reporter, Murphy will still be on the show as a guest judge and choreographer. So it seems Murphy and Michaels’ are essentially trading jobs.

I’m not sure that I’m in love with this switch, to be honest. Sure, Murphy’s high-pitched voice and occasional shrieking can grate on the nerves, but so can Michaels’ blunt (and sometimes unnecessarily rude) critiques of the contestants. Then again, Michaels’ isn’t undeserving of this role. She’s won two Emmy’s for her outstanding choreography in previous seasons. If any of the choreographers deserves more of a say in how the competition goes, its Mia Michaels.
