Smash Casts Newsies Star Jeremy Jordan For Season 2

If you caught the recent Tony Awards ceremony and you're a Smash fan, there's a good chance you recognized Christian Borle when he took the stage to accept his Tony Award for his role in Peter and the Starcatcher. Also nominated that night, though not for the same award, was Jeremy Jordan, who earned his nod for his role carrying the banner as Jack Kelly in the Broadway adaptation of Newsies. That's the part Christian Bale played in the movie, for those of you who have never seen the 1992 gem of a box-office-underperforming musical. We could say that worlds appear to be colliding here, but let's face it. Smash and the Tonys are sort of the same world, aren't they?

TV Line is reporting that Jordan has managed to land a spot in NBC's Smash for Season 2 as a series regular. His character is described as "a very sexy (and straight) Brooklyn-born singer with a self-destructive streak." Self-destructive? Hmmm. Well, Karen's on the market again, isn't she? And maybe after dating a suited up straight-arrow like Dev (who ended up cheating on her), she'll be more attracted to a bad-boy type. And those who were hoping to catch Jordan on Broadway can rest assured, he's not leaving the show just yet. He'll continue to do Newsies while he shoots Smash.

With certain characters being written off the show between Season 1 and 2 (including Raza Jaffrey's Dev), we should expecting some new faces to fill the gap. There are a couple of other roles set to be cast for Smash's second season. TV Line says the Broadway-focused drama series will also be casting "a gay male Broadway dreamer and an African-American female chorus member," but neither role has been filled yet.
