Smash: Season 1 Will Hit DVD Just After The New Year

NBC’s Broadway-focused drama, about one girl trying to make it on the big, wide stage and another girl determined to stop her, is finally coming to DVD, although fans will still have a while to wait before they can get the Season 1 set into their hands. Smash: Season 1 will be hitting DVD on January 8, 2013.

Yes, January 8 is a pretty long while to wait. Plus, it seems a little strange that Universal Studios Home Entertainment would not want to capitalize on the holiday buying frenzy with the upcoming release. My best guess is that Universal is stagnating the release until right before the Season 2 premiere, so as to get as much publicity for the upcoming midseason premiere as possible.

Smash: Season 1 also won’t be getting the Blu-ray treatment, but the set will come with a few extras that will focus on the song and the dance in the series. The set will come with a full featurette on Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman’s compositions for the show, as well as Joshua Bergasse’s choreography. Hopefully, these segments will look more at the nuances of the “Marilyn” performances and not the random and silly pop songs that pop up throughout the series. You can check out the full list of extras, below.
