Syfy has a brand new reality series slated to premiere this winter. Robot Combat League, which has a less catchy title than Real Steel but sounds like a real-life version of the flick, will premiere on the network on February 26, 2013.
The series will follow combat with robots that are controlled by human “robo-jockeys”—Syfy’s term, not mine. In Robot Combat League, 12 teams of two will be put together out of a diverse range of competitors, including Olympic athletes and helicopter pilots. Within each team, one person will take on the role as “robo-jockey” and the other person will take on the role of the team engineer (Syfy also has a silly name for this crew member, but I just had to distance myself). Each week, two teams will face off, with only one team advancing to the next round of competition. There can be only one true winner in the epic battle.
WWE wrestler and former Dancing with the Stars competitor Chris Jericho will host the series, which will feature three separate rounds of battle each week. The robots were created by special effects and animatronics guru Mark Setrakian, who has worked on such projects as Men in Black and Hellboy. Craig Plestis will executive produce the series.
