Following up on a two-night premiere, Almost Human will settle into its usual Monday night timeslot starting next week. The above preview shows us a look at Episode 3, “Are You Receiving?,” which will have Kennex and Dorian dealing with a hostage situation. Also, the ratings are in for last night, and while Monday’s broadcast didn’t do quite as well as Sunday’s, the series still performed solidly.

The premiere episode of J.H. Wyman’s new sci-fi drama brought in over nine million viewers and a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49. But Sunday’s episode had the benefit of a football lead-in. Returning last night at 8:00 p.m., the series was on its own and according to The Wrap, dropped from 3.1 to 2.2 in the 18-49 demo. These are just the preliminary numbers, and they may adjust. And I’ll be curious to see how that stacks up in millions. (UPDATE: EW says 6.6 million, which is ok. Not nearly as solid as its premiere episode, but not a disaster.)

One of the things I’m enjoying about this series so far are the moments of humor worked in to otherwise tense situations. Last night, that included Dorian reporting on the state of Kennex’s testicles, and then teasing him about the way he fumbled through his conversation with Detective Stahl. And in the preview for “Are You Receiving,” we see Dorian mimicking Stahl. That kind of banter could go a long way in easing the tension once in a while. There’s also Kennex thrilling kids with gory tales from on the job. But let’s not forget the “futuristic hostage situation” promised in the description below:
The thrilling action continues in another all-new, adrenaline-fueled episode. Detective Kennex and Dorian battle an intense and futuristic hostage situation, while Captain Maldonado (Lili Taylor) attempts to meet the terrorist’s demands, hoping to protect innocent people in the all-new “Are You Receiving?” episode of ALMOST HUMAN airing Monday, Nov. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (HU-106) (TV-14 L, V)

The human-robot partnership is just one thing that throws a sci-fi twist on what might’ve otherwise been a standard police procedural. The futuristic setting also offers the opportunity for creative and unique crime situations. We’ve already seen some examples of the advanced technology used in both crime solving and crime committing. It’ll be interesting to see what makes this hostage situation “intense and futuristic.”

I liked the premiere a lot, and I thought last night’s episode was pretty great as well, and a solid indication of what this show will be like as it settles into its normal format. While there’s the bigger arc involving the assault that nearly got Kennex killed, I’m eager to see more stand-alone episode plots like the one we saw last night, and this hostage situation that’s lined up for next Monday.

Almost Human airs Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
