Twitter Will Soon Sell You Movie Tickets
For quite a while now, directors like Marc Webb and stars like Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson have been using social media to heavily promote their own upcoming projects - usually through behind-the-scenes teaser photos, though sometimes by breaking casting news. But unlike music, cinema hasn’t really utilized social marketing as a direct way to bring in money,.That may soon change, if Twitter’s partnership with NBCUniversal and the Comcast cable company proves to be as successful as people are thinking. The official press release, via The Wrap, states that the deal will allow Fandango to begin selling movie tickets directly through Twitter. Wait, how did movie tickets get brought into this?
The press release is promoting the potentially groundbreaking “See It” button that will be added to tweets that allow anyone with Comcast Xfinity to either record or view shows, turning mobile phones into limited remote controls. The Fandango note about movie tickets was just a bullet point beneath all of the "See It" button’s other capabilities. Why would they be downplaying something which could be a marketing explosion? Maybe the bugs just haven’t been worked out yet, but Comcast’s chief business development officer Sam Schwartz is pretty optimistic.
“Fandango has become the primary way you buy movie tickets, and we have heavy interest from movie studios in promoting themselves on Twitter,” Schwartz explained to TheWrap. “There’s no reason the See It button couldn’t end up next to one of their Tweets.”
Essentially, this means between rousing Tweets that perfectly sum up society’s problems, actress Anna Kendrick could post a message about her upcoming horror comedy The Voices. And if the movie’s release date is set and tickets are available for pre-sale, anyone reading that tweet could purchase the ticket right then and there without a need to visit a different website. It almost sounds too easy, and I’m betting it will be.
Remember last year when MovieTickets.com went into a litigious uproar when AMC Theaters ended their exclusive partnership and started selling tickets through Fandango? I see something similar happening here, where theater chains that aren’t connected to Fandango may take a hit if moviegoers really take to this. Given how heavily Twitter feeds into the lives of the entertainment business, I can’t see how this won’t lead to at least a marginal increase in ticket sales. That said, there are quite a lot of people out there who can’t stand the ADHD mindset of the Twitter generation, and will probably rail against celebrities personally pimping out their own projects like this. There’s no pleasing everyone.
