Mark Wahlberg Claims Jennifer Lopez Is Hungry For Key Role In Cocaine Cowboys

Mark Wahlberg has been very chatty on the promotional trail this week on behalf on Contraband … only he has talked about so many other projects that Contraband’s usually buried behind the lead. Earlier in the week, Wahlberg offered up details about a potential sequel to The Fighter. And now he’s told "Sway in the Morning," a Sirius-XM satellite radio program, that Jennifer Lopez is “chasing” a role in Cocaine Cowboys. Listen for yourself, via a clip from MTV.

"We're waiting on the script. It's going to be sooner rather than later," Wahlberg said of the project, which documents the drug trade that swept through southern Florida in the 1970s and '80s. "We're going to shoot that in Miami, hopefully in the summer or the fall."

Wahlberg, who sounds very sleepy in the audio clip, basically tosses this nugget of information out after saying that an Entourage movie is coming, as well. And he adds that Lopez is hungry for the role of Griselda Blanco, the “Godmother” of a powerful drug family.

"It's one of those characters that will go down in history," Wahlberg said. "It's the role...if I could play Griselda, I would. That's Academy Award [bait] right there."

Now, before you start laughing, remember that Lopez legitimized herself with tough performances in Selena, Out of Sight, and Oliver Stone’s U-Turn. But yes, she since has gone on to accept safe, forgettable roles in films like Maid in Manhattan, Gigli and Jersey Girl in recent years. She is capable of acting, and if she wants to step away from her cushy American Idol gig for a chance at Oscar greatness, why not? Will it happen? We shall see.
