The Vow (2012)

The Vow will hit Blu-Ray and DVD on May 8. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is bringing even more extras into the mix for audiences who purchase Blu-Ray copies of the film. Blu-Ray copies will exclusively come with three featurettes, including one that delves into the true story The Vow is based on, about the real-life couple who had to realign their relationship after a traumatic accident inspired amnesia

As four day weekend holidays go, this Presidents Day weekend hasn't been very kind to new releases. Safe House, which traded places with last weekend's number one The Vow, held on to the top spot through Monday, and The Vow held on to second place. But Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which had debuted at third place for Friday through Sunday, got bumped to fourth by the more popular Journey 2.

The first box office reports form this weekend made it look like The Vow would be reigning supreme for the second weekend in a row, but as it turns out, Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington had a few surprises up their sleeve. Though the race for #1 is still pretty tight

Whatever dent last weekend's Super Bowl event took out of the box office, this weekend's Valentine's holiday status more than made up for it. Four new movies gave audiences a wide range of options and, while the weekend didn't shape up to be a record breaker, it was still a nice boost for the film industry.

The big winner looks to be The Vow, which brought in $700,000 from midnight shows (who goes on date nights at midnight?!?) and another $15.5 million estimated on Friday. It's on track for a $39 million opening weekend, which will help it just edge out Safe House, also hugely beating expectations

Fox seemed to have a pretty good strategy in place for their upcoming action comedy This Means War, planning a Valentine's Day release to capitalize on date night with a movie that appeals to women with romance and to guys with big explosions and chases. But apparently even Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy combined can't match the almighty power of Nicholas Sparks

It's hard not to think about Nicholas Sparks while watching footage from The Vow. While the movie isn't actually based on one of his novels - it's actually an original screenplay by Jason Katims, Abby Kohn, Stuart Sender, Marc Silverstein, and director Michael Sucsy - it stars Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, who both previously starred in Sparks adaptations and deals with memory loss in what appears to be the most mushy, romantic way possible.

A lot of good actors get caught up in cheesy Nicholas Sparks adaptations, from Kevin Costner all the way back with Message in a Bottle to Amanda Seyfried just last year in Dear John. But you have to start worrying when an actor goes back to the Sparks well twice, agreeing once again to weep, fall in love and be shot in soft focus

The Vow is not based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Yes, I understand that it has Rachel McAdams, who starred in The Notebook, and Channing Tatum, who starred in Dear John. Yes, I understand that the movie involves a relationship with some kind of overly-dramatic problem that threatens to tear them apart. I say this now because after you watch the first trailer you won't believe me.

Michael Sucsy, who made a splash by directing the HBO movie Grey Gardens, is directing and rewriting the script, which sounds like a pretty straightforward weepie that still might be watchable
