Harold And Kumar Get A Threequel

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay wasn’t exactly a gigantic hit last spring, but it was good enough for the stoners, and good enough for Mandate Pictures, which has given the OK for a third adventure. Variety isn’t even reporting the title of the movie, but John Cho and Kal Penn will both return, as will Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote the first two and directed the most recent one.

Guantanamo Bay is coming out on DVD on Tuesday, and will probably be as big a hit on DVD as it predecessor was—it’s precisely the kind of move best enjoyed in a state you can’t exactly get to in a movie theater without getting kicked out. And the second movie, while still plenty dumb and boasting a lot of poop jokes, was actually pretty smart about the story it told, and got into politics in a way that managed to avoid being annoying. And if you were worried about Neil Patrick Harris at the end of the last movie, well, you should have stayed through the credits—suffice it to say they’ll probably do their best to bring him back for the third movie.

With Pineapple Express coming out this August, Harold and Kumar don’t have the stoner market cornered anymore. But honestly, we could probably handle five more movies about those two, given how inventive the sequel proved to be. This is just one more argument for calling them the Cheech and Chong of the 00’s.
