Spock Gets His Green

With all the new cast members being announced for Trek, it’s easy to forget that somewhere out there Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto are trying on pairs of pointy ears. By all accounts, Quinto and Nimoy are becoming fast friends. They seem to show up everywhere together, and Quinto has admitted he’s spending a lot of time with Leonard.

As a fan of the original Trek, that makes his involvement really cool, but what would make it even cooler is if Abrams avoids screwing with the character. I know, I know, it sounds like I’m beating a dead horse. Maybe it’s because I’m a recovering Highlander fan, and I know how much trampling over continuity can ruin a potentially cool movie. I’ve been burned too many times by Connor McLeod, and now I’m taking nothing for granted with this reboot of Trek.

So for us paranoids, this comes as good news. Quinto spoke with Access Hollywood and confirmed his Spock will be greenish. “I’m anticipating some pretty early call times actually,” he says. “We gotta do the ears, the brows, the green tint down the skin. I imagine it will take a little while.”

It’s good to know that we won’t be getting the Enterprise style of Vulcans. The TV series, not the ship. In Trek’s last TV series Vulcans were inexplicably changed into perfectly tanned, over-aggressive war-mongers rather than the cool, slightly green, walking computers we know them to be. Fans forgave them because looking at Jolene Blalock caused them to break out in hives, but come on, they had it all wrong. For JJ Abrams’ Trek, green Vulcans is now one thing we’ve confirmed he has right. Check it off the list.
