Comic Con 2012: Elysium Spaceship Crash Lands In San Diego
Though today is technically just preview night, the action is up and running in San Diego for this year's Comic Con, with movie studios pulling out a lot of stops to impress the hundreds of thousands of fans who gather here each year. We've already given you a look at the flotilla of Batmobiles gathered outside one hotel adjacent to the convention center, but that's all about looking at the past. Want to get a look at another giant exhibit that gives us a glimpse at a very, very secret upcoming movie? Of course you do.
Over at the Hard Rock Hotel, also adjacent to the convention center, a mysterious spaceship seems to have crash landed-- a spaceship with ties to Matt Damon, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, and their new movie Elysium. Take a look at it below, and note that it's made by luxury car manufacturer Bugatti, of all things.
Elysium will be part of the big panel for upcoming Sony Pictures films on Friday, and Blomkamp will be on hand along with cast members Damon, Jodie Foster and District 9 star Sharlto Copley. We're hoping they'll reveal some footage from the film and a few more details about it, since so far all we know is this brief but very intriguing synopsis:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard the government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
We'll be on hand at the Elysium panel and also interviewing the cast, so stay tuned for lots, lots more Comic Con coverage for the rest of the week. We're here in San Diego wearing ourselves out so you don't have to!
