NBC Buys Western From Will & Grace Alum Sean Hayes' Production Company
Western fever continues as yet another horse opera is added to the TV development slate. This time, it's for NBC, who already entered the Western game earlier this year with Reconstruction, a show centering on a Civil War soldier in a Missouri town. Now Deadline reports that NBC is doubling down with a new untitled Western that hails from the Hazy Mills production company, headed by Will & Grace actor Sean Hayes. Friday Night Lights writer Kerry Ehrin will be penning the script for the untitled project. Val Kilmer, pictured above, has nothing whatsoever to do with the project. I just wanted to run that picture.
The show will be set in the 1880s and will tell the story of an East Coast doctor named Jacob who moves to a small town in the Colorado Rockies. Jacob specializes in mental disorders, and he will apparently use that training to solve problems in the town, rather than simply embracing the established tradition of blasting holes in anybody what done you wrong. While the show is described as having both comedy and drama elements, it sounds from their description like it might have a touch of the procedural about it as well. It's unclear whether the problems Jacob will be solving are of the criminal variety, but I can't imagine he'll spend all his time convincing taciturn cowhands to lie on his couch and tell him about their childhoods.
The new show adds to Hazy Mills' already full production slate. The company is behind Hot in Cleveland and the upcoming NBC show Grimm. They're also developing a show about a gay couple (one of whom would be played by Hayes) with a teenage daughter, and which is being written by Peter Tolan (Rescue Me).
