Alex Winter Shares Thoughts On The Possible Bill And Ted Sequel

Those of us who were pleased to hear the news that the script for the third Bill & Ted film was finished were left to wonder what the third movie might entail, should the project get a greenlight. Until today, all we had was Alex Winter’s tweet on the status of the script to go on, but the actor/director had more to say on the potential sequel when he sat down with MTV News to talk about his documentary Downloaded.

If ever there were a concern among fans about a Bill & Ted sequel, it would probably be how different things are since the first two films released (“Everything is different, but the same... things are more moderner than before... bigger, and yet smaller... it's computers...”). From what Winter tells MTV, it sounds like the decades between the last film and the third wouldn’t be ignored. If anything, the years gone by and the changes in our culture and to rock music might be a part of the story...

"We just kicked ideas around [over the years] and eventually, we kicked one idea around that clicked," Winter said. "It felt timely. Funnily enough, it felt better because so much time had gone by. What would it be like to revisit those guys now? From a comedy standpoint, it felt kind of cool to revisit two galvanized comic characters a chunk of time later, [exploring] what you can do with that from a comedy perspective."

When the reporter brought up the idea that perhaps Bill and Ted haven’t changed all that much in the time that’s gone by, Winter seemed tight-lipped, but it sounds like that might be a “very possible scenario.” Check out the interview below...

Given that Bill & Ted 3 hasn’t been given the greenlight yet, I’m trying to reserve my enthusiasm for the project just yet. With that said, Winter’s comments, particularly about their intent on bringing the humor, heart and tone of the original movies into the third one, do instill confidence in me that they wouldn’t just be “doing it to do it.” Given how beloved the films are by many of us, it’s good to know they’re putting a fair amount of consideration into how to make a good follow-up, rather than simply focusing on bringing the characters back to life for more laughs.

It’s also amusing to hear neither Winter nor Keanu Reeves seemed to have any issue sliding back into the roles when riffing a bit as they went over the script. I wouldn’t have minded being in the room when that happened. It sounds most triumphant.
