Horton Threatened With Mediocre Competition

What could be better than yet another pathetic remake of an Asian horror movie? Pretty much anything, but this weekend your options are more than limited. They're downright depressing.

Shutter, according to folks who bother watching foreign movies, is a pretty good little horror flick. Mind, I'm not talking about the movie coming out this weekend starring Joshua Jackson. I'm referring to the original released from Thailand four years ago. What with America's fear of subtitles and ex-"Dawson's Creek" stars struggling to keep up meaningful acting careers, it only made sense to take a good movie and turn it into another piece of Americanned horror crap. That would be the new Shutter [Read the CB Preview]. Enjoy at your own risk.

If horror isn't your thing, comedy is also being served, and this weekend you have your choice of repeats. while CB'a Josh Tyler (a confessed member of the church of Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow) loved it, Drillbit Taylor [Read the CB Review] is getting the tarnished star of cliché sub-mediocrity from most critics to the tune of 22% at Rotten Tomatoes. Rogen/Apatow fans can hype all they want about the return of Owen Wilson, but the rest of us may not have much to get excited about.

In the third new opening this weekend Tyler Perry headlines yet another movie written by, directed by and starring himself. Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns [Read the CB Preview]is sure to enjoy the same popular attention that Perry's past films have, but will that be enough in the face of two other popular genres?

While Tyler Perry movies usually do very well and have been known to come in at number one, knock-off horror remakes and Rogen/Apatow flicks have enjoyed the same success. Which one will come out on top this weekend? With any luck Horton will hold on to the stop spot, but he'll have serious competition. I'm not putting much money down, but I'm putting it on Drillbit.
