It feels like it was only yesterday that director Bryan Singer was sharing regular updates from the set of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but now the filmmaker has begun his wave of photos from the production of X-Men: Apocalypse. The new image is of a familiar sight, but it's apparently also one that will contain something new and surprising in the finished film.
For those suffering a touch of memory block where the X-Men franchise is concerned, the door that Bryan Singer mentions in the message and is standing in front of here appears to be very similar to the door that has given Professor Xavier access to Cerebro throughout the franchise. Of course, the phrasing used by the filmmaker suggests that we can expect it to reveal something different in X-Men: Apocalypse. So what could it possibly be?
If I had to put down a guess, mine would be that Singer is referring to the X-Mansion's famous Danger Room, where mutants are trained to use their powers in all kinds of simulated combat situations:
I'm sure there are many of you who will be quick to point out that a big screen version of the Danger Room wouldn't exactly be "new," as it was previously featured in the opening of Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand, but one could argue that it would be "new" to Bryan Singer, who has not yet featured the location in any of his X-Men titles to this point.
With that detail out of the way, we can focus on the good amount of logic that suggests what's being hinted at here is the Danger Room. As has been previously reported, X-Men: Apocalypse will be set in 1983 - a decade after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past - and will feature Professor Xavier opening the doors of the School For Gifted Youngsters to young students like Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp). It's pretty easy to believe that Xavier would have the Danger Room built in the early days to train them - perhaps specifically to get them ready for a showdown with the film's titular villain.
The Danger Room is just my guess, but if that's not it, what do you think is really going to be behind the "old door" in X-Men: Apocalypse? Leave you guesses in the comments section below, and then join me on a long wait for the film to be released on May 27, 2016.
