Once upon a time, Playboy was a sophisticated, thinking man’s brand. Sure, the magazine is still decidedly upperclass compared to the Penthouse’s and Hustler’s of the world, but the thought of a James Bond novel being published in its pages is a bit ridiculous today. Not so in the early 1960s. In fact, at one point in time, being a member of a Playboy Club was a status symbol. During a three month period in 1963, more than one hundred and sixty thousand people set foot in the Chicago Playboy Club, making it the busiest night spot of its kind in the world. Now Amber Heard will join them.

According to Deadline, Heard has officially boarded Playboy along with Naturi Naughton. You may remember Naughton from Fame, but she was likely cast her because of her work on Mad Men playing a Playboy Bunny.

Set in Chicago during the Playboy Club’s busiest year, the NBC pilot will follow Heard’s character Maureen, a troubled beauty from nearby Fort Wayne. Naughton will play her co-worker and closest friend Brenda. Alan Taylor, best known for his directorial work on Mad Men, will helm.

I’m pretty positive this is going to be well above-average, a throwback to when Playboy was synonymous with elitism, but it remains to be seen whether its intended audience will tune in for a show about Playboy. This could last five episodes or five years.
