If the new 15-minute preview for Game of Thrones "Ice and Fire: A Foreshadowing" was designed to remind us of how much we love this show, it certainly worked. What's more, in addition to including executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to talk about what's come to pass and tease what's ahead, the featurette manages to fill the video with footage and cast appearances by stars Lena Headey, Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage, along with Gwendoline Christine, Rory McCann, John Brradley and Natalie Dormer, and just about everyone else who plays a prominent role in the series.
Part of the featurette offers a look back at what's transpired, but rather than presenting it to us a recap, footage was revealed as the cast discussed some memorable moments, their favorite characters, the most badass lines spoken and other highlights. The fact that the video manages to work so many cast members into the preview is impressive, especially when we consider the size of the ensemble, but with so many great storylines and scenes, there was no shortage of material to discuss.
Also among the topics of discussion was whether or not Joffrey has any redeeming qualities. I went on record just the other day in stating that he really doesn't, but Emilia Clarke managed to say some nice things about young Jack Gleeson, who I have to imagine takes some heat for his incredibly unlikable character. There was also some talk of pranks and bloopers. At one point, Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau recalled a bit of dancing they did on set...
But enough funny business. Let's talk about what's ahead. For Tyrion, it sounds like he'll be getting some help from his brother Jamie. Meanwhile, Daenerys' dragons are growing up and they might not be nearly as tame as they once were. At the very least, we know she'll have her translator Missandei at her side. Not only was Nathalie Emmanuel in the video above, but EW recently reported that she's been bumped up to series regular this season, so expect to see more of her.
From what John Bradley and Kit Harington have to say about their own characters, it sounds like Jon and Sam will be on more even footing, and that Jon will be dealing with how things left off with him and Ygritte and the question of his honor in terms of the vows he took to the Night's Watch and to her.
There's also a major wedding coming up. It sounds like Joffrey and Margaery's big day will be a major event. That may be stating the obvious, but by the footage shown and what was said, it seems like we should expect this to be a big part of an upcoming episode and a grand affair. Because that's how Joffrey does it.
And then there's the action. It seems like the cast and crew are in agreement that Season 4 will be full of action. Things will get going more quickly. The stakes will be higher. Expect more climactic events than there have ever been before.
Also, Kit Harington says the CGI wolf is like a "big green sausage dummy" that he has to treat as though it's a beloved life-long pet. I may never look at Ghost the same again.
Game of Thrones returns for Season 4 on Sunday, April 6. Check out some photos from the new season here.
