Pick Of The Week: Slumdog Millionaire

This week the pick of the week is one of this year’s most lauded films, as the eight time Oscar winner and four time Golden Globe winner Slumdog Millionaire makes its way to DVD and Blu-ray. Not choosing it as the pick of the week would almost be a crime against film, no matter how much more publicity the disappointing Seven Pounds is getting.

I’m not picking Slumdog Millionaire because it was so lauded, or because owning it on DVD will finally give you the chance to experience that addictive musical number over and over again. No, I’m recommending it so people might check it out and see that it isn’t the “happy happy, joy joy” movie everyone seemed to think it was at awards time. There’s some heady stuff going on here, and maybe by checking it out on DVD or Blu-ray, people will finally see that there’s more here than a Cinderella story. I’m betting the bonus materials don’t quite go into the reality of the slums, or at least the reality of how this movie interacted with them (and left or improved them depending on which press release you read), but at least you can enjoy “Jai Ho” ad nauseum.
