24: The Movie

Classic television shows have been the fodder of terrible cinematic rehashings in the last couple of years. Only with the cleverly devised Bewitched has Hollywood recently managed to muster something that didn't insult both the audience and the original series. Thank goodness we have yet to see signs of AirWolf: The Movie starring a CGI Enerst Borgnine and Ashton Kutcher as Stringfellow.

Well, now present day television series are jumping on the band wagon.

Rumors floating around the Fox studios triggered the Calgary Sun to report that a movie based on the series "24" is in the works. According to "24"'s Canadian producer and oft director Jan Cassar, the project is a distinct possibility. “It could still be two years from now, so it’s far too early to say,” he said. He continued by indicating that even if he did know for sure he wouldn't tell, which probably means he does know and is covering up like a bad toupee.

Cassar also stated "The last I heard, the first hour will not be in real-time, but then something big will happen and real time will kick in. It still has to be worked out — it’s at a stage where they need to write it." The series has enjoyed an incredible four season run with the fifth on the way, but one has to wonder how well it would do as a movie, and whether or not it's even necessary or worthwhile. I for one think the show's format is a big part of what makes it successful and trying to cram it into a movie could be disastrous. Well, except for the fact that, as the folks at Jo Blo pointed out, we would finally get to hear Jack Bauer use the kind of language one might expect from a man trying to save the world from a nuclear disaster.
