Frodo Punks Out

I have a theory about Elijah Wood’s career. I think he looks at whatever Orlando Bloom is doing, and then does the exact opposite. Since Lord of the Rings Orlando Bloom has chosen to do big budget movies, date super-models, live in penthouses, and become a fixture in the tabloids. Wood meanwhile takes quiet little indie movie after quiet little indie movie, avoids the spotlight, and probably still lives in a funky little apartment somewhere and meets up with Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd for surfing vacations in New Zealand. Alright I don't know if last bit is true, but Wood just seems like that kind of guy. I mean, I’d totally believe that Sean Astin had him over for dinner last weekend, while it’s a sure bet that Orlando Bloom wouldn’t even take Sean Astin’s calls.

So, since Orlando Bloom has another box-office busting Pirates movie coming out this month, Elijah has decided to sign up for another movie that probably no one but reviewers will see. Thank god I’m a reviewer of sorts, because I’m really looking forward to it. Variety says Elijah Wood will play rocker Iggy Pop in a movie about his life.

The Nick Gomez movie is called The Passenger, and it will focus more on Iggy’s early years as a rocker with his band the Stooges. Iggy Pop is credited as one of the innovators of punk music, known for flashing his genitals on stage and cutting himself with broken bottles. So if you’ve ever wondered what Frodo is packing underneath his Elvish cloak, now’s your chance to get that answered.

I’m interested not because I care about Iggy Pop, because I don’t, but because I’m interested in seeing Elijah playing Iggy Pop. It’s completely against type for him, but he’s such a good actor that you’ve gotta believe he’ll do something pretty cool with it, even if this is just another iteration of the sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll biopic we’ve seen a million times before.
