The Surprise Movie That Might Top Captain America: Civil War This Weekend

Captain America: Civil War’s tenure on top of the US box office is set to come to an end after just two weeks, after it was revealed that The Angry Birds Movie is generating huge buzz ahead of its release into cinemas this weekend.

According to Fandango’s Fanticipation movie buzz indicator, The Angry Birds Movie has so far scored 87 out of 100 points, which means that it’s currently leading the website’s weekend ticket sales. The current predictions are that The Angry Birds Movie could take in as much $45 million, or as little as $38 million, over more than 3,900 screens when it hit cinemas over the next few days. Erik Davis, the Managing Editor over at Fandango, discussed the appeal of The Angry Birds Movie, explaining:

Family audiences are eager to check out The Angry Birds Movie this weekend and it appears the game’s immense popularity may help it slingshot past Captain America: Civil War at the weekend box office.

The Angry Birds Movie has actually already been released in 74 international territories, including Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil, which all combined to help it gross $43 million. It achieved this by finishing No. 1 in 37 of these countries, while it was only piped to first place in the international box office by the pesky Captain America: Civil War.

It’s going to take a strong showing from Captain America: Civil War to remain on top of the box office for a third week. Not only is it facing competition from the apoplectic fowls, but Warner Bros.’ The Nice Guys, which pairs Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe together with a Shane Black script, and Universal’s Seth Rogen and Zac Efron led raunchy comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising are also vying for box office dollars.

But it’s now emerged that Captain America: Civil War’s main competition will come in the shape of The Angry Birds Movie, which is the first film from Rovio Entertainment, who have paired up with Sony to bring the adaptation of the app to the big screen.

The Angry Birds Movie looks to have benefited from the dearth of major family films that have been released in recent weeks. The last to hit cinemas came when The Jungle Book was released back on April 15, which ultimately went on to gross over $832 million.

It also looks as though The Angry Birds Movie could have quite a long stint in the box office top 10, too. Or at least until June 17, which is when Pixar’s Finding Dory is released.
