Annabelle: Creation girl with doll

August marks the wind down of the summer movie season, and the selection during this month is more hit or miss when it comes to new releases. Fortunately for horror fans, Annabelle: Creation has found itself in the "Hit" category. The latest entry in the Conjuring franchise has been earned a decent reception among critics, and followed its theatrical premiere last night, the prequel centered on the possessed doll has gotten off to an impressive commercial start, making well over $35 million.

Annabelle: Creation collected $4 million in Thursday night previews, which is a solid debut for Warner Bros and New Line Cinema. This is also a record-breaking performance for the Conjuring franchise, as 2016's The Conjuring 2 originally held the top Thursday night haul with $3.4 million, followed by 2013's The Conjuring with $3.3 million and 2014's Annabelle with $2.4 million. Deadline reports that Annabelle: Creation is on track to rake in between $16-$17 million today, and could end its first weekend having hauled in somewhere in the range of $38-$40 million, remarkably exceeding the movie's $15 million budget and then some.

Just like how 2016 delivered hits like Lights Out and Don't Breathe, 2017 has been a good year for the horror genre so far. Movies like Get Out and It Comes at Night have been received well by critics and fans alike, and now Annabelle: Creation looks like it will be counted among the successes. It also helps that the Conjuring prequel doesn't have much in the way of commercial competition this opening weekend. The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature only made $330,000 on Thursday, and The Glass Castle, Ingrid Goes West, Good Time and The Only Boy Living in New York aren't expected to be financial heavyweights. There are still earlier releases like Dunkirk and The Dark Tower to contend with, but if the box office predictions prove correct, Annabelle: Creation could cement itself as one of top-performing movies for the rest of August.

Annabelle: Creation takes place more than a decade before the events of Annabelle, and its cast includes Stephanie Sigman, Tabitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia, Miranda Otto, Phillipa Coulthard and Grace Fulton. Check out the trailer below if you're still on the fence about whether or not the prequel is worth your time.
