Weekend Box Office: 2 Guns Locks Down Number 1, Smurfs 2 Debut Not So Smurfy

Sequels have had a hit and miss summer, but this weekend was a major miss for certain little, blue, computer-animated mushroom dwellers. The Smurfs 2 debuted in third place with just $18 million, little more than half what the first Smurf feature earned when it opened two years ago.

Since opening early on Wednesday Smurfs 2 has taken in a total of $27 million. Combined with world-wide sales it's cleared $80 million, leaving it unlikely to catch up with the over $560 million its predecessor earned. A third Smurfs movie has reportedly been in development since May, but given the modest performance of the sequel, it's future might be smurfed.

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's 2 Guns led the box office this weekend, banking $27 million for a tepid number one. That's a small step up for director Baltasar Kormakur from his first major feature release, 2012's Contraband, which also starred Wahlberg and opened with $25 million.
