Gass Gets On Board With Smith's New Pilot

Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass has announced that he will be doing a TV pilot which will be directed by indie filmmaker, Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks). Gass, who recently had a cameo in the film Wild Hogs said the pilot was called ‘Demon’ but we’re pretty sure he’s referring to the new CW comedy/drama series, ‘Reaper.’

Gass told movieweb.com in a recent interview that he would be playing a guy from hell in the Smith-directed pilot and that they hadn’t begun filming the show yet. Kevin Smith reported on his myspace.com blog back in February that he was “knee-deep” in casting for the show. Aside from Gass mentioning his involvement in the pilot, there have been no other announcements about the cast. The show is supposed to start filming in mid-march.

We reported last month that the pilot of ‘Reaper’ would be directed by Smith and center on a 21-year-old slacker named Sam who finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil when he was a baby. Sam has to pay the debt back by working for the devil as a bounty-hunter whose mission is to capture escaped souls and return them to hell.

There has been no word on when the show will air or which show The CW plans to pair the new pilot up with. Personally, I’d like to see Smith’s show teamed up with ‘Veronica Mars’ (if it manages to secure a fourth season, of course). ‘Veronica Mars’ is currently in its third season and centers on a girl who, when she’s not in college, moonlights as a private investigator. ‘Reaper’ sounds like it’ll be a bit darker than ‘Mars’ but with Smith at the wheel, ‘Law and Order: SVU’s’ Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters writing the pilot, and now Kyle Gass’ involvement in it, I have no doubt that there will be enough smart-humor in the show to make it a perfect match for ‘Mars.’

Disclaimer: We’re assuming that Gass was referring to ‘Reaper’ when he said the pilot he was working on was called ‘Demon.’ If anyone is aware of another show that Smith is planning to direct called ‘Demon,’ please feel free to drop a comment and let us know.
