The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is headed to CBS this fall, and over the last several months, the former Comedy Central talk show host has done a lot to promote his upcoming tenure on the series, including hosting a public access show and shaving his beard. This week he released another official promo video for the late night series, and it even features none other than former Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney. Check it out, below.
The new trailer for The Late Show is actually a pretty clever one. It does tell us a lot about what we already know about Stephen Colbert’s late night series. It will feature the man talking about the news, cracking jokes and giving interviews. However, it also gives us a good look at what a buttoned up Stephen Colbert will be like, and while it’s not nearly as outrageous as his character on The Colbert Report, it’s a pretty good reminder that the new Colbert wants to be welcoming and presentable for a variety of different generations and social demographics, not to mention political beliefs.
Before, when Colbert was signed on with Comedy Central, he was known more for playing a character, a character that was highly political and often poked fun at Republicans. It's important for him to show he's going to play it straight on late night, that people on both sides of the aisle can enjoy him without worrying he has an agenda. By getting Mitt Romney to play along, he's already starting to make that change, and if he can convince the rest of America, he could be in for a very successful run.
The late night landscape has changed a lot in recent years. Letterman, Leno and Ferguson have all left the late night scene. Fallon and Kimmel, especially, have all figured out their places in the late night landscape. Colbert’s kind of the last big name to take a late night slot in this new generation and he’s going to have to work really hard to compete with the guy who does “Mean Tweets” and the other guy with more viral videos than any other late night host in the game. That’s a lot of pressure, but it's also a great opportunity and Colbert seems more than ready to give it a go.
