While the zombie subgenre will always be predominately classified as part of horror, the zom-com has made great strides in recent years. Starting with Shaun of the Dead back in 2004, we have since seen terrific, funny undead movies like Fido and Zombieland that have turned the entire concept on its ear. We all may still be scared about the forthcoming zombie apocalypse, but now there are a few chuckles behind the tears. And it's not a new-born tradition that's going away any time soon either. Already on the way are zom-coms titles like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Breathers: A Zombie's Lament and now there's another one coming down the pipe.

Variety reports that an adaptation of the Ryan Brown novel Play Dead has been commissioned by producer Mark Canton and Lucky VIII Films. In the book, a Texas high school football team is killed when their bus is sabotaged by their rivals, but the local witch happens to be a football fan. Bringing the team back to life as zombies, the witch tries to get the team back to the gridiron, but has to deal with a few distractions along the way. Joe Schreiber, who also wrote the book Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick that is being turned into a movie, will write the screenplay.

Reviews of the book have called Play Dead hysterically funny and a sharp satire of high school football culture, so we could very well be in for a treat. I also like the idea of a defensive line sacking the quaterback and then ripping off his head to suck on the innards. I'd like to see that play out on screen.
