This has to be the biggest hype machine in years. All things being relative, not all that much has happened in terms of marketing for Transformers. Yes, of course we've had a teaser trailer and of course we've just listened to an interview with the writers, but those things happen every day to umpteen projects in development and we just don't seem to get as crazy about them as much as we do for our beloved robots. I swear I'd pay out on a bet for a fanboy coronary before all is said and done. Okay, I'm gonna make a call here, and you can say I'm an idiot but... I think this movie is gonna be kinda popular. There! I said it and I can't take it back!
As I say, we're just cooling off from the announcement of who's in and who's out on team Autobot and team Decepticon for this venture, and you can read Josh's report on the cast of robots here. The news has exploded in good and bad ways and is everywhere, chances are if you can't get to a computer it's already scrawled on a bathroom wall somewhere! But now there seems to be even more happening with some startling images being leaked, images which seem to have appeared on the IMDB forums but have been very hard to trace to a source. We caught them through JoBlo who seem to be holding the highest-res versions we can find for now.
Let us all just take a breath and first say that there's always the possibility that not all of these images are real. But in my opinion, and what sems to be the general consensus, these first few are legit. First up, I'll get straight to the coolest part. An actual Transformer...
This is of course Bumblebee "getting his robot on" in all his glory and I must say straight up... I'm impressed. Very impressed. The complexity and detail of this design for a practical element is simply staggering. I don't know the extent to which they intend to use this thing in practical terms but to simply look at it is jaw dropping. I realise he's supposed to be one of the more nimble characters and not a behemoth but this thing carries a graceful balance of "Shit that's huge!" and what looks like the flexibility to do cartwheels. He looks like he'll be light-footed and powerful at the same time. Can't wait to see him in action.
This other pic shows the lower half of a Transformer encased in ice which has been said to be confirmed as real as per available script details. Many seem to believe that this is Megatron and that he is discovered buried at the beginning of the film. Never heard that one befor but it's floating around.
And then we have this nice photo of team Autobot in full yearbook pose. Maybe if I stare long enough they'll transform!

[quote="Reason Says" All of you, go cut off your thumbs, and live hurling shit at each other like the rest of the monkeys...Bunch of fucking republicans.[/quote]
Really Reason? You think the best way to sound like you have a semblance of wisdom is to come out of the gate insulting people who are simply sharing their opinion with you? Not the seemliness of a decorous sharp minded individual. Don't feel compelled to respond, I doubt further tailings from your "evolved" sensibilities would be conceivably graspable by our piddling "republican" minds.
You may want to look up the word "evolution" though, since as you've used the word, you suggest that the team of hacks responsible for the horrible designs being called Transformers in this Michael Bay flick spent some time in iteration and gradual thought-taking development of the designs. It might even suggest that these same artists (if you can call them that), built a concept based on successful designs of the past that in fact are the elements of cultural presence that could be the only compelling reason to make a movie years later that shares the same name.
Unfortunately, this evolution of design obviously never happened. "Nostalgia" aside; what we have as opposed to an updated, revised or even redesigned visual, is a jumbled mess without form or function that has no merit or aesthetic virtue.
Whether you're clinging to some love of a past design or not, the bottom line (in my opinion, and many others') is that these new transformers are just out right bad designs. Visually displeasing to the eye and overall a jumbled mess of less than familiar shapes. The majority of the robots don't read well, nor do they adhere to many tried and true artistic philosophies. When I look at these steaming piles of who-knows-what there's an old acronym used in the commercial arts that comes to mind: K.I.S.S.
Guys you have to look at the logic. We have to think about if something like this were to really happen what it would be like. Do you people really think that if a helicopter were to transform right in front of your eyes, that it would be a skimpy square body with square legs and such? HELL NO!!! You have to understand that the point of making it real is making it REAL. I am a really big transformers fan. And I’m glad they made them look like they do because it gives them a reality feel to them. Everyone should just give it a chance. Try to think about how much money they spent on it. Do you really think they would have spent that much on a movie they thought wasn’t going to be impressive. And for god sakes, Stephen Spielberg has a hand in it. You know this movie has to be great in someway if he is in on it. I mean Spielberg has made some legendary movies! All I’m saying is go see it at least once. A "Real" transformers fan would!!!!
so yeah i'll agree with many of you who complain about how the transformers are going to look. GREAT JOB AT SCREWING UP A CLASSIC! these transformers are supposed to be big and bulky looking not skinny and have all these openings and all. You can barely even see their faces... and Megatron...what the hell is that. Looks like he got his inspiration from a tribal tattoo! CANT SOMEONE JUST MAKE A CLASSIC COMIC BY USING WHATS THERE ALREADY! OK...bumblebee may be weak being a Bug for now adays but thats what he is and he certainly will rock ya in robot mode. and Optimus is supposed to be a different looking truck and when in robot form be the bigger of them all and look commanding...now he just looks average. This movie maybe good but it certainly won't have CLASSIC written on it. why not just call this movie GO-BOTS?!
I'll add my 2 cents as far as the designs are concerned.
Whether it's about nostalgia, whether it's about change, whether it's about the new generation, or new technologies, or evolution, or whatever... I don't care. As long as you keep the general spirit of Transformers, it's fine. In fact, I have nothing against the designs being updated or changed whatsoever. Bumblebee as a sportscar? Go ahead. Prime with flames? Why not? My complaints about the designs have absolutely NOTHING to do with them being different. Rather, my complaints have more to do with the fact that they're butt UGLY. Case in point, the two ugliest Transformers, IMHO.
Starscream: what happens when Waspinator, a jet, and a gorilla have some serious, serious three-way.
Megatron: Nagafuki Surprise gone terribly wrong.
Change the designs? Fine. We've seen it with the likes of Car Robots and Beast Wars and the likes. However, I'm sorry, but there IS a concept where sometimes less is more. With Megs and Starscream, however... my gosh, they're TERRIBLE to look at. I won't shoot down Michael Bay for having a lazy mind, though. On the other hand, they're also not exactly the most appealing thing to look at.
Of course, designs and all are all fun and great... but bottom line is, PLEASE, for the love of all, may the movie NOT suck. That's all I really ask for.
SSJRagnarok,
Dang dude, what the heck are you talking about? Your knowledge of transformers is sadly lacking. Jazz wasn't a minivan, he was a Porsche, and Bumblebee didn't "choose" to be a bug, all of the transformers were changed to their earth forms once they landed there, without their knowledge. As for the rest of your post.....WTF?
Ok folks, heres the deal. Trasnformers ARE the 80's. You can blah blah blah about how they've changed over the years and how the change for the movie is all in stride but that's garbage. The Transformers haven't been the Trandformers since around 87 or so, after that they turned into a disgusting, cheap rendition of what they SHOULD have been. This movie could and SHOULD have been scripted during the 80's, what's wrong with that? Does everything have to reflect today's horrible pop culture? The choices for vehicles via the photos are horrible. Prime doesn't look like that, Prime will NEVER look like that, it automatically sets the stage for the movie to just be another Hollywood dibacle. IF they are going to stray from the original appearances what else are they going to stray from? You change one thing, you change everything and before you know it the movie doesn't even remotely resemble the Transformers. Starscream is a F-22, give me a break! Atleast he's still a jet fighter, if some of you on here had your way they could have made him a condom dispencer and you wouldn't care because as long as they transform it's an ok movie to you. Give me a break. Starscream is an F-15, and since the F-15 is still the AF's mainstream fighter it could and SHOULD have been scripted that was for the movie. Would making Prime the early 80's style freightliner truck, red nonetheless, have ruined the movie for you? I'm gussing by your overwhelming tolerance of Hollywood's garbage that it wouldn't have. Hollywood had a chance, A REAL CHANCE, to make this movie faithful to its origins...guess what.....they failed again. All of you folks who have the "they've gotta change with the times" attitude need to take a hike, you're not fans and all you do is advocate hollywoods butcherey of a good thing. Thanks alot.
i think this movie will rock! and do i say that? because i still have an imagination and i do beleave in evolution and that nothing will every stay the same as it was. im an ironworker and i know its physically impossable for a 45 foot robot to turn into a handgun i knew that as a child too! i loved transformers as a kid and i still do now! iv'e been reading everyone bash a movie that is not even out yet? you people should move out of your parents basement and go get laid! i don't see anyone complaining about their computers getting better? why not make the transformers better too? we are looking for realisim here!
IS IT A FACT THAT THE TRANSFORMERS BODIES NATURALLY ADAPT TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS NO MATTER WHAT PLANET THEY ARE ON OR WHAT TIME IN HISTORY THEY ARE IN? THATS POSSIBLY THE REASON THEY HAVE HAD SO MANY FORMS OVER THE YEARS? I THINK I HEARD IT ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL ON A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ALIEN ROBOTS...........OR WAS IT THE SCI-FI CHANNEL.
Greetings all. please allow me to have the floor for a moment. when i started my research of this phenomenon called "Prime Directive" i learned that our beloved transformers would be undergoing something they are very familiar with and have been since our love for them began in the 80's: a transformation. those of us who loved Prime in all his glory were stunned when the long awaited movie in 1986 included the death of Optimus Prime. still more of us gawked a season or two down the road when Bumblebee said "HEY! I'm a new gold bug!" thus changing his name from that point on. Megatron, oh Megatron. your first taste of an alternate form was brought about NOT by the writers, but by the hordes of angry parents tired of toys which depicted violence. as a result, he was changed, transformed into a new entity named Galvatron, who was voiced by none other than Leonard Nimoy, an actor all too familiar to those same parents who hated Megatron, thus making him more suitable for a family program and a far better choice for your child as a plaything. we hated it, but we accepted it because the franchise was evolving. it was changing. it was (dare i say it?) TRANSFORMING. those of us who longed for the return of optimus prime got our wish of course, and he rose to meet the challenge once again before meeting his final final end soon after. somehow, though it was the event which brought closure to us, and allowed us to finally let him go. while megatron, er, excuse me: Galvatron made his way onto our list of LEAST favourite decepticons, we were cursed with a hiatus from our beloved bots. that is.. until beast wars/machines. can we say "Departure"? i was appaled. i was spiteful. i was... surprised. children loved them. kids ten years younger than me watched the shows religiously. i was left in the dust. so much back story and exposition crammed into a tiny yet robust series, and i didn't learn until later that in fact the show was truer to it's roots than i could have ever imagined. pressing onward, RID. well at least the tag-line was back. a firetruck was a bad choice in my opinion for Optimus, yet something made sense: Optimus was a hero. he was THE hero. nobody F-s with the big man, and he does it with such class. Megatron had more power than ever, assuming six or so different forms at will. a gun no-more it didnt' seem to matter i mean, who DOESN'T love two headed dragons? Megs and Prime could still duke it out with the same flair as always. Armada, Energon, and now Cybertron. Optimus has had some GOOD looks and some BAAAAD looks. megs? yeah the tank was cool. it suited him. and THIS time he wasn't dependent on another decepticon to wield his awesome power. this evolution for Megatron sparked the beginning of something great and made him that much more dangerous. so let's flash forward please: 7/4/07 and the line outside the theatre looks the same no matter which theatre you go to. fanboys and fangirls alike of ALL ages are there. for the first time in a decade, the parents of these screaming Trans-Fanatics are getting what they always wanted, and larger than life. we daydreamed about different cars turning into robots. we saw semis travelling down the road as kids, then as adults and wondered "Optimus? is that you?" the younger generation standing poised beside us with a gleam in their eye saying "this ain't my daddy's Transformers" and oh how right they are. have you had the luxury of having a child tell you (upon inspecting a G1 Optimus) "that isn't optimus prime. he's too boring" or "that's it? four moves and he's transformed?" well you know something? they're right. we were happy in those days because it was the height of the technology. nowadays they are fully articulated and have dozens of moving parts, and for my money i'd have thought it sorcery to see something like that in the 80's. so here we are faced with a dillema: will this movie suck, or will it be great. i submit this to you, loyal fans and posers alike: if there be an optimus prime, and we be faithful followers of the genre, let us follow Prime unto his new destiny and celebrate his newest transformation. let us accept that perhaps this image of megatron is his form prior to assuming a form more suited to life on earth. and if not, take great joy in watching Prime beat the bolts off of this unusual incarnation of a cherished villian. let us wish our beloved bumblebee the best in his newest form and acknowledge Volkwagen's stance on keeping their vehicles out of a potentially violent film. we all have wants and desires. Michael Bay wants to cater to us all, and honestly, it's a hard job. You may feel he's fallen short of your expectations, but from what i've seen he's touched upon the heart of what transformers is all about, and will be delivering in no uncertain terms that which, in the end, we've all come out to see: Robots in Disguise.
I guess i DO have one gripe... wasn't it "Spike" Whitwickey? and where's Carly? does this mean Daniel didn't really exist? oh PLEASE let it mean that Daniel didn't exist. ;-P
The coolest thing in the whole Transformers universe had to be the cannon on Megatron's arm. Anything hit with it, was messed up. Even the sound it made was cool. As long as he has that cannon, and Optimus is still a Semi. I don't mind the other changes. As a matter of fact, I think Bumblebee looks KICK ASS.
Fellas please! Let's remember what is important here. It's not the form of the transformer in question, it's the character we love. If they (the director and co.) don't keep Starscream's cocky, power-hungry attitude and Megatron's Take-no-bulls**t ways, then I'll be pissed off. That is what kept me a loyal fan for all these many years. In fact, I prefer the 80's movie verision of Galvatron instead of Megatron. He rocked!
MEGATRON WILL NOT BE A GUN OR A DINO, HE WILL BE A TRIPLE CHANGER, TANK AND HELICOPTER, IVE ALREADY SEEN THE SKETCHES FOR IT, PLUS WHILE HE IS IN HIS ROBOT STATE, HE LOOKS LIKE AN EVIL 2 LEGGED INSECTMAN, LOTS OF DETAIL, SORTA LIKE THE BUMBLEBEE BUT WITH A WICKED FACE(SCARY). IT LOOKS VERY COOL AND CANT WAIT TO SEE IT.
i'm pretty sure they have reason why they change the look of each characters??? why dont you guys relax and wait for the movie to come out then you can staRT fcking them off...
Judging from the comments I have read so far, it seems as if the rest of the transformers fan base is as torn as me. I REALLY want to see Megatron do his trademark backflip and turn into a German Pistol, but I realize the absurdity of a giant robot shrinking to the size of a Piece that another robot can shoot. It would be about as absurd as the magical stretch pants worn by the Hulk in the Ang Lee adaptation that always fit no matter how big he became. I just hope he is some kind of projectile weapon based aparatus.
I understand that a certain level of modernization is mandatory, but certain aspects changed, currupt the "feel" of the movie. You want to make Ironhide's screen image more representative of his warrior nature, cool. But why change his color scheme? Or Primes? Flames? come on now. I agree with other posters that the feel is the most important thing, but it must be reiterated that changing too many aspects of the charecters will change the feel. I am trying hard to keep in mind that it is a big budget hollywood production, so cheese is the bottom line. They would have made all the vehicles Volvo's with Marlboro stickers on the sides if they got paid enough for the placements. But it looks like GM won that race, so we'll have to be happy with 'Maro's and Hummers. A question: Does anyone know if they will go through the whole reformatting by Teletran 1 that they did in the original series?
As for the arguments stated here about how the whole thing is modernized, so all the G1 fans need to get with the program....If they are so amped about making a modern version, then why go to all the effort of tracking down the most popular voice actors fromt he original? Why not get the voice actors from Energon or Beast Wars? Or George Clooney for that matter? And why parade it around the Comicon as nostalgic? They are obviously counting on the G1 fan bases interest, and dollars to make the film a success, as well as newly initiated fans from the most modern series incarnations. A suggestion; Lets all raise 25 million and make a the biggest fanboy made film of all time. guaranteed to please.....that is unless you were one of the fans not invited to the screen writing. I guess in the end, Im gonna go see it no matter how much trash I talk. I just hope I get to hear Ironhide say, "When are we gonna bust some deceptachops?!?!"
I am a huge Transformers fan,but I must say if there's are the photos of the finished vehicles in this movie,I an very disappointed.
To give then so credit,I was impressed with Bunblebee as a robot, but not as anything else.
My main dissapointment must be Optimus Prime, come on where's the cool looking 80s red box shaped truck,he's not this crapy long lose truch.
And what's with the crapy looking flame design all over his body,he had nothing like this.
They realy need to sort this out before they spoil a good movie.
Michael Bay is not the right person to do this move,Im sorry
Reading all these comments, I feel heartache for the true fans of the greatest invention of all time: The Transformers. Of course we'd love all the characters to look like the originals. Why not have Bumblebee as a bug? But if you look at the glaringly obvious difference between the characters on the TV show and the actual toys, you'd see that it's totally impossible. The only way to make the robots look like the ones we grew up with, is to make them look like the toy versions. Which in most cases, is pretty dire. That's why they were modified to make them easier to animate as cartoons. A classic example is Ironhide/Ratchet. They look ridiculous as robots and you have to split them apart and everything. Can you imagine what that would look like on the big screen? And yeah, how does Megatron shrink and grow between modes? I always preferred the cartoon characters, because they always transformed into the exact toy vehicle mode and remained a cool looking robot too. Remember, this movie is a fantasy. I've had dreams about what this movie would look like since I was 8. Before CG, the only way you could fathom a concept like Transformers on big screen was stop-motion and (god forbid) guys in costumes a la Power Rangers. Let's just all agree to disagree. I've been waiting my whole life for this movie. And I am looking forward to it.
yo the real fans know what it is megatron with the tank ..i dunno.........if thats the case u should have just made into like the computer animation like the new version of ninja turtles and please do not rush it like they done to so many classics in the past......to name a few....... street fighter......king kong.......mortal combat 2...........the original batman movies after episode 2 it was corny..and buble bee should be a bug....... "BUBLE BEE" i mean come those of us that are 25 yrs of age and up know the real tranformers hollywood always has to srcew something up please i see a list of marvel characters coming out "WOW" dont mess them up like the first hulk why woudlnt they just do his suit the same as the thing on fantastic four..... and just use computer animation for some parts........work together and stop trying to upstage the next writer/creator or director take advice from one another at least ....i mean competition is one thing but destroying peoples childhood cartoon heroes thats just not a nice thing to do..please fans wait years for these movies but when the film comes out screwed up we are like "what they heck did i just watch" it almost hurts not trying to be corny but thats what a real fan would feel and im one real fan
that`s no bumblebee.that`s not even a transformer.that is a bionicle.
i`m a transfan.but i`m no lemming that follows the transformers over the edge.if i want a trans movie i want a good one.with bots that looks like transformers.don`t bother with the series periodes.energon AND cybertron sucks.and if the bots look like the bumblebee peace of crap than this movie is going to be as shity as the last reincarnations.that is what i have to say.
Let me give you my quick thoughts. For starters Beast Wars took place about 300 years into the future. From what I've seen of this movie, it takes place on present day Earth. That means Generation 1. I don't want to see a Semi Truck rolling around with the Maximals and the Predacons because it's a different show for a different time. Maybe Beast Wars could be a sequel. To use Star Trek as an example (that many would understand) I don't want to see the original Enterprise docking at DS9. Different shows at different times. People have invested a lot of time and money into this and a history has been developed. And that must be followed for the continued support.
Updates are necessary but should be in the spirit of the show. Ironhide being the tough war veteran was a minivan. Not very tough. Making him a truck makes sense but why not keep his original color of red? Same for Optimus Prime. It would help to bridge the old with the new. Megatron as a gun is a bit silly too. But if the core groups are planes vs. cars why not make him a stealth jet or some other cool looking plane? Something that is the top of the line vehicle that shows he's the leader. Bumblebee doesn't make sense. The screenwriter said, "He's the same underdog character we always knew and loved." To me Camaro does not say underdog. It says muscle car, cool, powerful. This is the real reason why Bumblebee being a Camaro is stupid. VW won't give the rights? Fine. Update him to a Scion xB or some other compact car. The new alternators toy line has done a pretty good job (for the most part) of updating a lot of the transformers. This would be a good line to start with.
One last thing. Just because I enjoy something doesn't mean I should just blindly watch a movie about it. I don't care about a Transformers movie. I care about a good Transformers movie. The ultra hard core Star Wars fans watched The Phantom Menace and loved it just because it was a new Star Wars movie (Yes, I know there are many opinions of this). But a lot of people were disappointed because they didn't want a new Star Wars movie; they wanted a good Star Wars movie. They have made a great move by hiring Peter Cullen for Optimus, but got the character of Bumblebee all wrong. I will continue to watch and see to determine if this movie will be worth my hard earned money. I don’t want a bunch of bad sequels either. I want the movies to be good. Like the live action Spider-Man TV show wasn’t good so it was put to rest. Now we have two really good movies. If Transformers suck, put it to bed for another 15 years and maybe someone will come along and make a good movie out of it.
First off, I agree with Vince...the movie hasn't even come out yet and won't for another year...give the movie team a chance to make the movie b4 y'all decide to bash it. As to the new designs of the transformers...times have drastically changes since the original transformers came out in the 80's. Things are going to change. If they weren't modernized in a way, attendance to the movies would go way down in my opinion. The transformers have always been changing thier looks. As each new series of the transformers came out, they would scan into their databanks newer and more modern vehicles to copy. So why not have them change in the movie. It makes sense. The way you capture an audience is to keep things changing, keep them guessing, and getting them to want more. I think this is going to be a very good film. Alot of big names are going into helping make the movie. So wait till the movie comes out and then make your comments. Peace out...
