Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Debuts A Loud, Angry And Ass-Kicking First Trailer

Movie trailer debuts. They’re like an itch that you won’t be able to scratch for months, after you’ve picked the skin all the way to the bone. I know a girl once who…Okay, everyone, that was my lame attempt to jump headfirst into the noir-soaked world of Robert Rodriguez’s highly anticipated sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, but I’ll accept that I’ll never be as cool as Marv (Mickey Rourke) or Dwight (Josh Brolin), and that the world I live in is far too colorful. Is it August yet?

This starkly gorgeous preview comes to us from Dimension, although Rodriguez has been touting himself as the one who would be debuting the trailer on his Twitter page all of today. He even went so far as to release the following image, just to make things all official and red fonted.

But enough about Rodriguez’s plans souring. Let’s talk about the busted and interspersing plans for all these Dame to Kill For characters. Fans of the first film may enjoy seeing more of Nancy (Jessica Alba), the stripper with a heart of gold, as she copes with the death of Hartigan (Bruce Willis). (Spoiler: she’s still stripping.) Meanwhile, Marv wakes up around a bunch of dead bodies and doesn’t know how he got there. And I bet he has to bust some heads wide open to get answers.

As for the new characters, we have Ava (Eva Green), who gets her former lover Dwight to help her get away from her abusive and extremely wealthy husband (Marton Csokas), although Dwight ends up on the wrong side of a good bargain there. And then there’s Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a gambler whose attempts at heroism wind up being a bit misguided and end up turning against him.

Almost everyone in the cast – which also includes Dennis Haysbert, Jeremy Piven, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Rosario Dawson and Stacy Keach – gets a shadowy second or two to shine here. The most powerful image to me, or at least to my nightmares, is the shot of Ray Liotta screwing a silencer onto his gun, because LOOK AT HIS EYES. As if that guy isn’t intimidating enough without any CGI intensifying things.

I love it all, from Gordon-Levitt’s screams to Jamie Chung’s swordplay to the green tint of Green’s eyes as she pulls the trigger. It’s been nine long, long years since Sin City first blew my violence-addled mind, and its August 22nd release date can’t come soon enough. I think when I go to buy my ticket I’m just going to throw an innocent bystander through the ticket booth windows and make him get it with his teeth.

Here are a few newly released stills from the film to help curb our more primitive motivations.
