Venom fans will be crawling in their skin to hear that Sony Pictures is moving forward with the movie about the beloved Spidey villain. Skepticism is certainly understandable after Spider-Man 3 completely tarnished the film franchise and the infamous evil symbiote, but the Venom spinoff has something Spider-Man 3 did not: Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Wernick told Sci Fi Wire “We've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward." Wernick wasn’t sure when the film would go into production, but I’d imagine we’ll be seeing Spider-Man 4 way before Venom. The latest rumors have Spidey 4 shooting in early 2010 heading toward its May 4th, 2011 release. There’s a chance this latest Spider-Man movie could be used to set up Venom. When asked about a connection between the two films Wernick explained, “We can't really talk about that, unfortunately. Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step."

The project may be out of Reese and Wernick’s hands now, but I’m glad to hear it was in their hands at all. After seeing Zombieland when it hits theaters this weekend, I have a feeling you will too.
