Wreck-It Ralph Arcade Video Shows Off 90s-Style Kart Racing
A recent piece of viral marketing for Disney's animated film Wreck-It Ralph shed some perspective on the title character's origins in the form of an 80s commercial advertising Litwak's Arcade and the exciting 8-bit game available, Fix It Felix Jr. The latest video takes us to the 90s to show us the ad that features kart racing game Sugar Rush.
Wreck-It Ralph follows the title character (voiced by John C. Reilly), a video game villain who leaves his game, determined to prove he has what it takes to be a hero. On his adventure, he encounters Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), an adorable game character from Sugar Rush. Her game is featured in this new video, a 1997 ad for Litwak's Arcade.
It's amusing to note that Litwak's has upped their birthday incentive from two free quarters to four in the time that's passed between 1982 and 1997. I wonder how many quarters you can get on your birthday now…
Other than that, Sugar Rush's yummy dessert-theme aside, is anyone else having a major flashback to Mario Kart 64? The ad above is from the year after the Ninendo 64 kart racing game released. In addition to the similar kart-racing set-up, the dinging countdown sound is the same (or extremely similar) and there's even a Lakitu-like cloud guy dangling the traffic light before the Go. It's this kind of attention to detail that could make Wreck-It Ralph really fun for those of us who have fond video game memories.
Wreck-It Ralph arrives in theaters November 11. More information and photos can be found in our Blend Film Database.
