Is There Really Essential Gumby?

So, here’s a scary thought for you: 2007 marks the 50th Anniversary of Gumby. That’s right, the big green hunk of clay has been around for fifty years. It’s amazing after all that time the character hasn’t lost anything – which is to say that unless you’re stoned, drunk, or 3-years-old, it’s not that funny.

Okay, so maybe I’m not the biggest Gumby fan (I think the funniest thing the character had to offer was the SNL skits with Eddie Murphy in the giant green costume), but some people are. So for those people, Genius Products is releasing the best of Gumby from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s on DVD as the Gumby Essentials.

Not only are the best of Gumby’s adventures being released on DVD, but they are being digitally remastered as well from the original films, held by the Clokey family (Art Clokey was the series/character creator). The episodes have been returned to their original11-minute format with a restored soundtrack as well, instead of the slightly edited six-minute shorts.

Here’s a look at the episode list, as well as the bonus material that will be included on the DVD release, coming to stores on September 4th.
