Double Fine Productions hasn't been terribly vociferous in recent times due to the fact that the studio has been hard at work on the upcoming Psychonauts 2, which was crowdfunded back in 2016 via the investing platform, Fig. However, that doesn't mean that Double Fine hasn't been hard at work on secretly porting Grim Fandango Remastered to the Nintendo Switch, especially after it was announced that the game would be coming to the hybrid system back in June.
The remastered version of the game features the new and improved HD visuals, including high-quality textures for the characters and brand new dynamic lighting modules to help make the world of Grim Fandango pop with the sort of aesthetic that only Double Fine -- though at the time it was LucasArts -- could muster.
The remastered version of the game also includes a completely re-sampled and recorded live orchestra for the soundtrack, along with the addition of the concept art browser to see what the artists came up with during development, and over two hours of additional and exclusive developer commentary covering the game's development, gameplay, concepts, and designs.
This also comes with the news that, as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the game's release, there's a physical version of Grim Fandango Remastered being released for the PlayStation 4, along with a vinyl of Peter McConnell's re-recorded and remastered soundtrack from the game.
Niche gaming boutique iam8bit will be handling the physical rendition of Grim Fandango Remastered for the PS4, along with working with Double Fine Productions for a special Grim Fandango art show that will showcase the game's art at the Day of the Devs event taking place at The Midway in San Francisco, California between November 11th and November 14th. The art show will also continue to run from November 14th through December 31st at the PWNshop in Los Angeles, California.
As for the game itself, Grim Fandango follows the ups and downs of a travel agent working in the underworld's Department of Death division. He's supposed to help departed souls find a travel package so that they can find eternal rest based on the deeds they've done (or haven't done) when they were alive. However, it turns out there's some corruption running amok within the travel agency, and the lead character, Manny Calavera, finds himself both on the run and in search of a mysterious woman who may have ended up with a raw deal due to the agency's shenanigans.
It's a very well-told story that takes a lot from Mexican folklore and a little bit of the storytelling from Casablanca and wraps it into a dark comedy that's both funny and somber all at the same time.
The award-winning title was re-released over the course of the years for a wide variety of platforms, including the PlayStation Vita, on Steam for PC, the app stores for Android and iPhone devices, and now, finally, for the Nintendo Switch. You can grab digital (or physical) copies of Grim Fandango Remastered right now.
