Erector Set: The Movie In 3D

Monopoly, Stretch Armstrong and Battleship are one thing, but a movie about an Erector Set? In 3D nonetheless! According to Coming Soon, an independent production company called Helix Films is teaming up with Meccano Toy Company to create a film based on the construction toy. Helix is keeping mum on plot details, but plans to develop a storyline with franchise potential. And, of course, Meccano is hoping the film will allow them to expand the brand into other areas like television and video games.

Meccano CEO Michael Ingberg is hopeful that the film will maintain the mission the toy has been pursuing since it was created by Frank Hornby in 1901. Ingberg explained, "It's perfect for a film franchise as it is certain to entertain but also stimulate creativity and imagination as the Erector toy system has done around the world for nearly a hundred years."

That’s sweet, but is this a joke? I was a big Erector Set fan growing up but this movie seems more like a merchandising ploy than an effort to make a quality film. Can they even develop a plausible plot? And what is this about Erector Set stimulating ‘creativity and imagination?’ Every set comes with a strict set of instructions. That doesn’t sound very inspiring to me.
