Street Fighter Official Site Is Not Entirely Official

The timing may seem a little weird, after all the Street Fighter videogames are at least ten years past their prime, but at least the upcoming new Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li has nowhere to go but up. The first attempt at turning the fighting games into a movie was nothing short of a disaster.

The Justin Marks scripted movie is currently shooting over in Thailand, they’re now in their second week of filming. And, unlike a lot of heavily followed franchises they aren’t trying to hide. Marks and his team sent me an email today asking us to let all of you know that they’re reaching out to their fans, with a production blog being updated right from the set. You can find the film’s production blog at StreetFighter.net.

If it doesn’t look very professional, it’s because the blog isn’t something put together by the studio. It’s only semi-official. It’s being run by a guy named Aaron Horwitz, who, seems to be simply doing it in his spare time. In fact, when I asked them, the film’s distributor 20th Century Fox had no idea the site even exists. So while it’s officially being updated by people involved in the film (something we’ve been able to confirm via direct communication with Marks), it has nothing to do with the studio. They’re interacting with their fans simply for the love of it, and in a world where these production blogs are usually slick, calculated, viral marketing tools masquerading as fan involvement, that’s pretty damn cool.

The first tidbit released from the site is the image you see below. Hello Chun Li concept art! Click over there for more.
