Watch Mythbusters' Adam Savage Become An Extra For Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner has one of the most vibrant, gorgeous, yet downright bleak depictions of the future ever committed to film. With Blade Runner 2049 now in theaters (and garnering phenomenal reviews, despite a weak box office haul), that world has only become more profound and fleshed out. It's a landscape populated by ridiculous characters (human and replicant alike), and now a new video has debuted online showing Mythbusters' Adam Savage immersing himself in it as a Blade Runner 2049 extra. Check out the clip below to see it for yourself. Fair warning, though: you might get jealous.
That video shows just how much work it takes to make a seemingly insignificant person pop in the Blade Runner universe. Following Adam Savage through the costume and makeup departments as he prepares to take on his role as an extra, we watch him slowly but surely evolve into one of the grimy Los Angeles citizens who live in the background of a given shot. It should be noted that this is technically not a sequence from the actually Blade Runner 2049 film. Instead, it is one of the several short films produced to fill in some specific mythology gaps leading up to the premiere of the new movie.
It has become increasingly clear that the folks behind Blade Runner 2049 understand the special connection that fans have developed with its grim, tech-noir version of Los Angeles. Even at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con some of us here at CinemaBlend were lucky enough to check out a Blade Runner-inspired pop-up bar almost utterly identical to the one seen in the latest installment in the franchise:
Despite the fact that it is a grim and relatively uninviting environment, fans have come to know and love this gritty Asian chic take on futuristic Southern California. Even without characters like Rick Deckard or Officer K walking around it becomes a living and breathing ecosystem where some genuinely fantastic stories can unfold. We are all looking for a way to get there if we love the world developed by Ridley Scott and continued by Denis Villeneuve; Adam Savage just happens to be one of the lucky few who has truly immersed themselves in that universe.
Blade Runner 2049 is now in theaters, so make sure to check it out. Looking ahead to the rest of the year as well as the next, get a look at our 2017 movie premiere guide, as well as our 2018 movie premiere guide, and fill out your moviegoing calendars accordingly!
