Fantasy is on the rise in Hollywood at the moment. As Bryan Singer tries to coax movie-goers up the beanstalk this weekend for Jack the Giant Slayer, Sami Raimi is hoping that audiences will have great interest in a trip to Oz next week. The director’s Oz the Great and Powerful opens in theaters on Friday, March 8, and Walt Disney Studios has one last look before you decide to plunk down cash for a ticket:

Still no great look at the Wicked Witch of the West in this final clip. Raimi’s wisely keeping that reveal up his sleeve. Though that has to be Mila Kunis’ laugh at the very end of the trailer, suggesting that the witch she plays in the prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz is the one who eventually gets the green skin and wicked sense of vengeance against Dorothy and Toto.
Most of what we've seen in trailers and clips for the new Oz has us feeling very positive. So far, I have been extremely impressed with Raimi’s use of 3D, and the dazzling visuals of this fairy tale land look like they are going to kill it on the IMAX screen. And that’s excellent, because I still don’t see the reason for revisiting a bona-fide classic like The Wizard of Oz unless you believe that you have such a rock-solid script that it can stand up to the scrutiny. We shall see. Raimi directs Oz, with James Franco playing the magician who matures into the Wizard we all know and love. The movie storms theaters next Friday. Do you think you’ll be hopping into your own hot air balloon and traveling to a nearby theater to see it?
