2008 Winter TV Preview: The Moment Of Truth

The Moment of Truth - Season 1

Premieres: Wednesday, January 23rd at 9:00 p.m. EST

Network: Fox

Host: Mark L. Walberg

Website: Fox.com

This is a new game show in which contestants have to answer a number of increasingly personal questions. They will be asked questions and if they’re caught in a lie or they choose not to answer, the game is over and they walk away with whatever money they’ve earned up to that point. The jackpot is half a million dollars.

The contestants shouldn’t be surprised by any of the questions. Prior to going on the show, they will answer dozens of questions while hooked up to a lie detector. Then when they get up on the stage, they’ll be asked up to 21 of those questions and their answers need to match up with what the test determined. From what I’ve seen in clips, the questions range from things like opinions on world issues (eg. Do you really care about starving kids in Africa?) to more personal questions (eg. Is your husband the best lover you’ve ever had?).

The show is hosted by comedian/actor Mark L. Walberg (not to be confused with actor Mark Wahlberg).

Somebody please explain to me what would possess people to do this? I used to think Fear Factor was the ultimate low in reality TV. Now that I’ve seen some clips from this show, I’m pretty sure I’d rather eat bugs than have to answer such personal questions in front of millions of people (including family and friends who could be hurt and/or embarrassed by what could be revealed on the show).

That said, I’m not above checking out the first episode to see if it’s any good.. I have a feeling it’s going to leave me feeling bad for the contestants and their families, though. I’m not entirely opposed to that (after all, seeing people make fools of themselves is part of the foundation of reality television and goofy game shows). But watching people sell their secret thoughts for money might be a bit too much for me. We’ll see.
