Andy Rooney Tribute To Air On 60 Minutes Sunday

Earlier today, Cinema Blend reported Andy Rooney had died. When someone as prolific and special in his own curmudgeonly way passes away, he or she deserves an appropriate accolade. I can’t think of anything better to celebrate Andy Rooney’s life than by partaking in a 60 Minutes tribute to the man.

Apparently, neither does 60 Minutes. The longtime CBS program already has plans in the works to give Rooney the proper on-air sendoff. On Sunday, at the end of the 60 Minutes episode, the program will close with a segment celebrating its longtime writer and newscaster. It sounds like it will be an extremely fitting way to present a tribute; until his recent retirement, Rooney was the last man to present in each episode with his famous segment “A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney.”

Back in September, during Rooney’s final episode, he gave an interview with other 60 Minutes veteran Morley Safer. According to THR, Safer will also be presenting the Rooney segment this weekend.

The program has carved out a niche since its debut in 1968, and much of that credit should be placed at Rooney’s feet. He may not have been around for the beginning, and he may not have seen it through to the end, but for more than thirty years, devoted fans stayed through the last few minutes to take a listen to what the loveable curmudgeon had to say. Something tells me this propensity to stick it out certainly won’t be absent from Sunday’s well-earned tribute. Get your DVRs ready. This is one program you might want to save.

60 Minutes airs Sunday at 7 p.m. on CBS.
