Chasing Amy's Joey Lauren Adams Will Appear On Grey's Anatomy

When Grey’s Anatomy kicks back into gear for Season 12 later this month, the show will have jumped ahead in time as a way for Shonda Rhimes to allow Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith a chance to grieve offscreen, which will help to bring the show back to non-depressing waters. But just because Meredith’s life is a little more cheery doesn’t mean that everyone is living on easy street, as Joey Lauren Adams has been cast for a guest spot that will initially make Miranda Bailey’s life a lot more complicated.

The last time we caught up with Chandra Wilson’s Bailey in the Season 11 finale, it was made clear that the attending physician would be in contention for the job of Chief of Surgery. It looks like Debbie Allen’s Dr. Catherine Avery, who is in a relationship with former Chief of Surgery Richard Webber, will be the one picking Bailey’s competition, and according to EW, she will apparently be choosing Joey Lauren Adams’ character as her pick for the gig.

That’s an interesting role that will hopefully last for more than one episode, as Bailey and Avery aren’t exactly on the best of terms at any given point, and Avery will clearly be bringing in someone that she thinks will completely convince current Chief Owen Hunt that she’s the right person for the job. I know that the show won’t end up making Bailey get into a physical fight with Adams’ character, but I’d be lying if I said that wouldn’t be interesting, especially if it meant that Round 2 would pit Bailey against Avery. Are there any steel cages in Grey Sloan Memorial?

Adams, who rose to fame in films like Jefery Levy’s S.F.W. and Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, has appeared in quite a few TV series over the years. She got her career started on Married with Children and its spinoff Top of the Heap, and she spent more recent years with roles on Party Down, United States of Tara and Switched at Birth, and last voiced a character on Adult Swim’s Mr. Pickles. Obviously an appearance on Grey’s Anatomy is going to be one of the most-watched projects in Adams’ career, and we certainly hope it’ll get her more small screen roles in the future. On the feature side of things, she’ll be seen reprising her role of Gwen in Smith’s Mallrats 2, as well as the indie flicks Electric City and All the Birds Have Flown South.

Bailey has been promised a bigger job by Webber for years, so maybe this season will be the one where it all pays off, assuming Adams doesn’t cut that that short. Find out when Grey’s Anatomy premieres Season 12 on ABC on Thursday, September 24.
