FX Picks Up New Animated Comedy Series

FX announced today that they will be adding a new half-hour animated comedy to their fall lineup. FX ordered six episodes of the currently-titled Archer, created by Adam Reed, who co-created Frisky Dingo and Sealab 2021.

We had the chance to look at a clip from the series (and unfortunately, we can’t post it here) and it looks to be fairly hilarious in a darkly funny and definitely not for kids kind of way. Below is FX’s description:

Archer is an animated half-hour comedy set at ISIS, an international spy agency, where global crises are merely opportunities for its highly trained employees to confuse, undermine, betray and royally screw each other. The series features the voices of Jon Benjamin as suave master spy “Sterling Archer,” whose less-than-masculine code name is "Duchess”; Jessica Walter as his domineering mother and boss, “Malory”; Aisha Tyler as his ex-girlfriend, “Agent Lana Kane”; Chris Parnell as ISIS comptroller and Lana’s new love interest, “Cyril Figgis”; and Judy Greer as Malory’s lovesick secretary, “Cheryl.”

“This project has been a great surprise for us and we’re excited about adding it to our fall schedule,” said FX Exec-VP Nick Grad. “Adam Reed has written successful animated series for Adult Swim/Cartoon Network, and he has taken this format and given it a live-action feel. It is a smart, adult comedy and the characters are given voice by a terrific cast. It clearly fits the FX brand and we believe it will find support from the fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

The description of the series, added to the clip we saw makes me think this series is going to be a great fit for FX, which has a tendency to go for edgy and occasionally inappropriate humor (which, in my opinion, is the best kind of humor). If you’re familiar with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia then you know what I’m talking about.
