It’s hard to keep up with just how many TV shows are getting remakes and continuations, and it’s even more difficult to know what actors are reprising their original roles and which ones aren’t. Fox is busy putting together another season of 24, and while many have been (and will still be) clamoring for Kiefer Sutherland to come back for one more round, the actor isn’t even beating around the bush anymore and has destroyed all expectations that we might see super-agent Jack Bauer on the small screen again.

In case you thought that there was even a little bit of wiggle room in Sutherland’s mind that a future for Bauer was in the cards, he has no problem shutting that down.
24 is definitely over now for me. It’s one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever been given as an actor, but it’s moving on without me. I want to do other things.

Even though Sutherland has said he probably wouldn’t return in the past, he also pointed out that he’d said the same thing before 24: Live Another Day came into existence, so hope remained strong. But those days are gone, and we’ll have to get used to a counter-terrorism drama without someone gruffly yelling “Dammit!” every few minutes.

Thankfully, however, Sutherland doesn’t have big plans to stay away from TV forever, and it’s actually his medium of choice at the moment. Here’s what else he had to say to the BBC.
I want to do more television. My experience of 24 was unbelievable, but the main benefit was that it was nice to do something that people actually watched, and that they enjoyed. There are some movies I’ve made people might have enjoyed, but there were nine of them watching.

Sutherland has attempted a couple of series outside of the 24 universe in the past few years, although nothing really stuck too hard. He had the web series The Confession, which was pretty great, and then the sci-fi-tinged Fox drama Touch, which lasted one season. I’m all for seeing the actor taking more TV roles, as he’s a solid lead in just about everything he appears in, regardless of whether people are watching or not. As the most recent Metal Gear Solid game proved, he’s great even if it’s just his voice being used. A 24 animated movie, anyone?

As far as the actual 24 spinoff is concerned, it will reportedly center on a younger male tracking down the bad guys with an older and more experienced female agent guiding his actions. So now we’re just left hoping that Mary Lynn Rajskub will come back as Chloe.
