TV Recap: Big Brother 10 - Week 7 Veto

Who in their right mind would nominate one of their own alliance members? Good question, Dan! Howie did that back in BB6 when he nominated Sarah and James. In that case though, it had less to do with a deal and more to do with James playing both sides but all the same, I don’t think that was the best choice for him or his alliance in the end. Keesha said things never work out the way they’re supposed to. Was she right? I guess it depends on which alliance you’re hoping comes out on top this season.

Memphis wasn’t happy about being nominated but on Dan’s advice he played it cool (well, a pissed off version of cool, anyway). Dan said in the diary room that he thinks nominating Memphis will destroy any suspicions about their secret alliance. He has a point but it’s still a major risk to nominate him. Dan told Memphis about the third part of the deal, which is that Ollie gets to pick the replacement nominee if the Veto is used. Ollie told that part of the deal to Jerry and Michelle. It was agreed that this part of the deal would remain a secret but let’s face it, the deal was a mess to begin with so I don’t blame either guys for blabbing about it.

While Michelle thought it was a pretty good deal, Jerry believed it was unlikely that they could trust Dan to keep it. No surprise there as Dan is Judas in Jerry’s eyes but still, the guy saw reason when Ollie and Michelle were clearly ignoring the flaw in the deal: It was too good to be true! Seriously, who would keep a deal like that at this point in the game?!

If Ollie were thinking clearly, rather than bragging about how he has all of the power (when really, he has zero power), he would’ve renegotiated the deal, asked for safety for him and Michelle and left it at that. No forcing Dan to nominate a specific person or controlling the Veto nomination. Just safety. Dan might have actually stuck to that deal but Ollie overshot and it screwed his alliance in the end.

The houseguests were told that America was going to vote for one of them to get a phone call from home. This resulted in Michelle crying over missing her parents. I can’t imagine going that long being totally cut off from the people I care about so I don’t blame her for tearing up. But Jerry’s story trumps Michelle’s. His wife of fifty-something years has Parkinson’s and he really wants to hear from her to make sure she’s ok. And it was Jerry who won the call.

A phone was set up in the living room and when it rang, Michelle picked it up only to hand the phone over to Jerry. Jerry talked briefly to his unenthusiastic great-grandson and then he spoke with his wife, who was polite and refrained from commenting passed a “Well…” when Jerry asked if she thought they were all behaving themselves. The phone call was sweet and even though I’ve been less than thrilled with Jerry this season, I couldn’t help but get a bit teary to see how happy and relieved he was to talk to his wife.

Everyone but Ollie got to play in the Veto. The competition was space-themed and involved the houseguests being hooked up to harnesses and “flying” from one platform to another transporting puzzle pieces to a big magnetic board. The houseguests were split into two groups. The first three houseguests to play were Keesha, Dan and Michelle. Michelle had problems with the magnetic board and wasn’t doing well. Dan was trying not to win so that Keesha could win this round. Keesha did great with the puzzle and beat the other two in the end.

Memphis, Jerry and Renny went next. While Memphis was flying back and forth doing his puzzle, Jerry struggled a bit and Renny was off reliving Marti Gras in her head as she swam through the air, enjoying her astronaut costume. Michelle and Jerry both said they do puzzles at home all the time but neither performed well during this competition. Memphis won “Heat 2” and he faced off with Keesha in the final round. At this point it didn’t matter who won. If Keesha won, she could have used the Veto to save Memphis. But it seemed like Keesha was giving the competition to Memphis because unlike the first round, she didn’t really seem to be trying all that hard to finish the second puzzle and Memphis won it easily.

While this was going on, Ollie told the D.R. that he’s giddy, realizing he’ll get to use the third part of the deal to choose a replacement nominee if the Veto is used. He went on to say that Renny and Keesha wouldn’t be too happy with Dan after the Veto Ceremony. Well he had part of that right.

Before Veto Ceremony, Dan told Renny and Keesha the third part of the deal. He wanted them to know that Ollie was going to want one of them to go up as the replacement but that he had no intention of going along with that. He did string Ollie along though, ensuring that he’d honor the deal. Ollie said that he wanted Keesha to go up in Memphis’ place.

Dan had devised a plan to get everyone’s hands dirty during the Veto ceremony. I have to say, as much as I’ve been enjoying Dan’s strategy in the BB house this season, I think he went a bit overboard with the little show he put on during the Veto ceremony. Before the ceremony, he pulled Ollie, Michelle, Keesha and Rennie aside individually and asked each of them who they’d want to go up as a replacement. Michelle said Keesha and Dan confirmed with her that she’d be willing to say that out loud during the ceremony. When he talked to Renny and Keesha, Keesha had no problem saying Michelle but Renny didn’t like the plan. She could tell right away that Dan was trying to manipulate them and Renny’s not one for having her strings pulled (especially because she doesn’t trust Dan). She said as much but then agreed to go along with him on it as long as she could say the name of whoever said her name.

When Dan pulled Ollie aside, he asked Ollie to say Renny’s name. He wanted to make sure each houseguest said the name of another houseguest so that no one would appear to be safe. Ollie seemed confused by this since he told Dan earlier he wanted Keesha to go up. Dan said the plan’s still on but he needs Ollie to say Renny and for some reason, Ollie agreed to go along with it. At this point I think he was just so concerned that Dan was sticking to the deal that he would’ve said anything to make sure everything was good to go.

Dan didn’t give the houseguests a choice when it came to playing “Replacement Nominee Roulette.” After Memphis used the Veto on himself, Dan stood up and told the houseguests that if anyone refused to answer the “Who do you want to go up on the block?” question or answered with anything other than a name, they’d be going up on the block themselves. I kind of wish Renny would’ve called his bluff and refused to answer but she played her part as planned. After everyone gave their scripted answer, Dan told them all, “Anytime you gamble, you’re taking a risk. In this house, someone’s gambled with someone else’s safety and unfortunately you better know who’s making a bet for you. In this case, Ollie, you lost the bet, Michelle – go on the block.”

I wish the BB producers would have deviated from the usual “Veto episode” format and shown some more of the aftermath of that Veto Ceremony. I wonder if they’ll have time to show it during next week’s Fast-Forward episode. During the credits, we did get to see Ollie storming around breaking stuff and Michelle swearing in the diary room and stating that she knows Dan’s a “plant.”

Videos sprouted up all over Youtube showing one of the confrontations that took place after the ceremony. Both Ollie and Michelle are apparently convinced that Dan is plant and that Monica’s not really his girlfriend or that she’s part of production or something. Here’s the video below. Be warned though, it’s uncensored and contains some rather nasty words, including Ollie calling Memphis a “f**got” numerous times :

And before I forget, viewers are asked to vote in a poll on CBS’s website, which will have something to do with this week’s Head of Household competition.

And here's my poll:

This poll is no longer available.
